Summer 2019 Transfer Thread

Im not gonna argue with you, go read up on the 2013 confederations cup, he was italys best player nearly every game

4 goals and 6 assists in 40 appearances over two seasons for Juventus. Not exactly setting the world on fire.

He was a decent player back then but nowhere near as good as you're saying. Then he went to Sunderland who were an absolute tactical black hole.

His stature has nothing to do with his lack of success in England, it's more that he was a slightly above average footballer in a team of average to poor footballers with poor to awful managers.

Im not sure why were discussing giaccherini, but youre wrong. He played in euros 2012 and 2016 and played really well. He didnt get picked for wc 2014 because hes apure winger and italy played with central midfielders and forwards and he was shit at sunderland.
Juve had a ridiculous team in 2012-2013, they also played a 3-5-2 very similiar to us with bonucci in the coady role, a lwb and a rwb, they didnt use wingers.
Not sure why were having this argument, can we get back on topic

I dont think anyone knows what the topic is anymore...

A couple of posts ago he had played really well for Juve that year and now you're making excuses why he didn't play a lot. [emoji23]

Rather than dig your hole any deeper would it not be easier to just admit that physique isn't a determining factor for a successful Premier League career and that small players can be productive over here?

You realize juve won the title that season right? And they had a ridiculously good team? And giaccherini played very well for them and exceptionally well for the national team? Which part is untrue? What hole am I digging?

Physique is a very determining factor. English football favours strong, tall, fast players with lots of stamina. Just because there are a few exceptions to the rule, doesnt mean its not true.

Sterling is built like a sprinter and hes one of the fastest players in the league, how is he frail. These comparisons are getting ridiculous
Traore is only what 5'9, include him too

Well he's not tall, nor particularly strong, which were your first two characteristics of successful English players. Things have moved on a lot, those sort of stereotypes are no longer relevant.

Edit - and he's not built like a sprinter either. That's very random.

How many sprinters are as short as Sterling?

Enough posters have given examples of smaller players who've had perfectly good careers in this country. You can't just throw half arsed caveats at everything that proves you wrong, especially when half of them are completely baseless.

If you want to right off every player that's sub 6' then feel free, plenty will continue to prove you wrong.

Giaccherini played 940 minutes for Juve season before Sunderland. Massive contribution.

Sterling built like a sprinter? He’s built like a bantamweight boxer.

Zola was fine years ago when the PL was actually physical. It isn’t particularly physical anymore.

Small players are fine as long as they are actually quick and skilful. If they are short, slow and not skilful then obviously they will be terrible.

So short is the same as being tiny and frail?
Moutinho and jota are short, would you say theyre the same build as alex pritchard or lainez (as was the original argument)?
The english game favours tall, strong, fast players. 95% of players leading the scoring, assists, defensive charts are exactly that. Doesnt mean there arent exceptions

I could really go a Mcd's strawberry milkshake just now.

Whatever physical criticism you want to throw around there are going to be players that prove you wrong. Good players find ways to overcome or at least cloak their weaknesses in order to be competitive.

You can't simply write someone off for being too short, weak, slow or whatever weakness they may have at face value. You'd ignore so many good players in doing so.

Mata is the prime example for me, literally nothing going for him as a physical specimen at all, still a remarkable footballer when he was at his best though.

Lainez is hardly built out of toothpicks. He's also only 18 and has time to continue to build his body. He's already probably more stout than Costa's ever been.

And it's all really moot because Betis won't be selling him unless we throw absolutely ridiculous money at them. Which I doubt we will as we've moved away from wingers and Lainez is 100% a winger.

Bobby Charlton 5 foot 6
George Best 5 foot 7
Denis Law 5 foot 8

The holy trinity REALLY struggled with size in English football.

Dele Alli is hardly a tank, either.

David Silva, Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling, Lucas Moura, Wilf Zaha, Gerard Deulofeu, Mo Salah, Raheem Sterling, N'Golo Kante…

You wouldn't call any of them great physical specimens, but they're all more than useful in England.

Fabio Cannavaro was 4ft 3. And he was one of the greatest defenders of all time.

Ryan Giggs 5 foot 10.
He'll never make it as a winger in English football, the fookin shortarse
