Slovan Bratislava 1-2 Wolves: The Verdict

MGW is getting enough football at Wolves. The question is whether he's up to it in any formation we play. His finishing has to improve to be a viable option. He has it in him, see Newscastle in China, but he has to learn to relax in a proper game

The evidence so far is that he is not doing the simple things well enough. His decisions are questionable , his passing off and he doesn't score enough. I don't see a premier league player there at the moment but he has time. Its no coincidence the 3 4 3 changed the game with Traore scaring them stiff. And Traore is learning. His decision making is so much better than last year. Traore shows it can be done when raw talent and speed is coached to think. The same needs to happen with MGW.

A good win in the end, but we could and should have been more aggressive in the first half. I'll forgive Jota his red (how do you get a yellow for being pushed over?) as it's been coming for two years, and if we can't beat Slovan without him we don't deserve to qualify. Kilman looked OK to me - that green kit is bloody impressive camouflage - but MGW did nothing to persuade me he has a future with us. Also getting increasingly worried by Coady getting isolated 1 v 1 - seems to end in tears every time.

I presume Jota's 1st card was for kicking the ball away and/or telling the lino he is a bit useless

Coady has been a bit unlucky this season. Every slight mistake has resulted in a goal

Second yellow is fine - the first should have been for the Bratislava player rather than him. Crap decision

Was out for most of this at a meeting I couldn't get out of - got the score at about 85 mins - however we played am chuffed with the result. To get this many away wins in Europe is a big deal (& we should have got something from the Braga home game anyway)

Looking at that clip, it's for moving the ball when he's looking to take the quick free kick, only really a yellow at that time in the game. The second is just stupid. As has been said, it's two years in the making, at some point it was happening. I love him playing on the edge, but sometimes you have to learn to grow up, hopefully this does.

His punishment will be being sent to Witton

Annoyingly if we'd got just a draw there (we should have) we'd be very close to being through now.

Would have it:

Wolves 7
Braga 5
----------
Slovan 4
Besiktas 0

We'd basically only need to win one of the home games, preferably vs Slovan.

Ah well, this makes it more interesting :D

It's great watching this team develop in Europe, even though we have some obvious issues the unbeaten run continues and getting wins in these away games is no mean feat. Kilman was a big call and didn't let us down and Nuno gets plaudits for his subs

Night and day between the first and second half performances. We look infinitely better with Traore and Jota on the pitch, compared to MGW and Cutrone. Unfortunately for MGW, that’s another mark against an increasing tally of below-par performances. Nuno will be losing patience with him, I reckon.

Kilman was solid, albeit he seems to lack a bit of pace? (Which worries me alongside Coady). That’s him ahead of Jesus in the pecking order anyway.

That said - excellent result. Puts things firmly back in our own hands. Two away wins on the spin in Europe is a fantastic effort from the lads. Raul looked exhausted by the end and he will definitely start v Newcastle at the weekend. Is Jota banned for the next game or the next European game?

Jota's ban is just in Europe

Hopefully Neto is fit in a fortnight's time and he can just play on the left vs Slovan at home.

Watch the striker properly and we should win with plenty to spare, they aren't very good.

Jota's ban is just in Europe

Then I reckon he should start v Newcastle. Maybe back to 3-4-3 with Jota-Jimenez-Traore as the front three. Doherty is much better when Traore is ahead of him too.

Cutrone in the middle of a 3 with Jota / Neto / Traore / MGW either side would look a lot better than in a 2 with Raul. It just doesn’t work.

Cut through them at will second half. Much more like it. Another good game for Saiss.

I quite like the Doherty/Traore partnership on the right hand side, a 3-4-3 with Jota, Jimenez, Traore seems our best bet atm.

Yes, I thought Saiss was excellent. Wherever he plays he has to start, one of a few players we have in very good form.

Saiss has been tremendous this season. Really happy about that as it gives us a lot of options. Another great display from Adama again. I am ordering extra humble pie there and thoroughly enjoying the fact I need to.

Are we at a point where we can’t afford for Adama NOT to be on the pitch? That said, it has to be as the right forward in a 343, so there’s our answer re the formation for now. Saiss virtually undroppable right now as well.
