Leicester City (H) League Cup Rd 3 25.09.2018

I think that Doherty has looked better going forward but as Tredman alluded to it could be that the way we set up to try and bring players to the left to open up the right flank more for the diagonal balls into space. When Johnny was first signed, the narrative was that he was more of an out and defender however all of the evidence I've seen is that he is more than capable in an attacking sense too.

Better yes, miles better or overwhelmingly better no.

Positives were that Ruddy proved that he won't let us down if we need him, Jonny/Vinagre as the wingbacks would be fine, Dendocker looked very comfortable and Cav got minutes under his belt (some of his play was that of a man who hasn't played a competitive game in five months, but that's to be expected). Good pen from young Benny as well.

Leo was poor but does not deserve some of the treatment he is getting from the crowd, slag him off after the game by all means, not during (and show a bit of fucking respect as well). Hause is always going to struggle on the ball in this system and the midfield two never looked right. Traore isn't ready to start games, his crossing was actually pretty good last night but he spent far too much of the game picking up the ball in the wrong areas and he doesn't show enough for it - he's a great option for the last 20-30 minutes but some way behind Costa at this point. Our first two pens were rubbish but Ward was way off his line when he saved them, no idea how the linesman let that slide, you've only got one job to do in that situation.

A shame to go out but it was about the right team to send out and other than a very poor opening 10 minutes we did ok.

Maybe Doherty is just better at making those runs and finding that space than Jonny?

You could be right Mark, but what I was trying to say is that Boly/Neves look for that out ball from the left whereas you don't see Ryan Bennett spraying such passes out from right to left. I might be wrong but that's how I see it.

Jonny is overall a superior player to Doc by quite some distance IMO. It is more of a case of Vinagres development. As things stand it appears Doc and Jonny are our best options.

At some stage Vinagre will get his chance and he has to be better than Doc not Jonny to warrant a place for me.

Doc has improved loads but let's not get carried away.

Very good point, Doherty usually floats into that space unnoticed then gets picked out from miles away whereas those long balls don't tend to go from right to left.

Not unduly concerned going out early of Ketamine Cup, last night was pretty dire in terms of entertainment. Totally preferable to keep first team players fit. If for instance Demari Gray has picked up a long term injury not sure how many Leicester fans would honestly see the victory as preferable over not losing an important player?

I would have preferred seeing more fringe players last night rather than fewer. I was looking forward to seeing Ryan Giles, Gonclaves as well as Ashley-Seal (who made a brief cameo). When Jota took the heavy tackle in the second half it demonstrated the futility of the competition - really what was the point of risking his participation in Saturday's game over a now pretty meaningless competition?

Good to see Dendoncker show he's ready to make an appearance when the opportunity arises and Hause demonstrate he could, at a pinch be PL standard when required.

Yes, with Neves he often picks the ball up facing our goal. Its more natural for him, as a right footer, to take a halftime turn to the right and ping it out to Doc.

I thought Dendonker did ok in a sense, a couple of moments he switched off. One where Vardy went clean through and he got wrong side and then proceeded to run away on the wrong side. Second for there chance where Ruddy saved, he was on Jonnys side but ran back into position leaving a gap for the cross in. He should have covered Jonny.

I’m disappointed to go out - winning a trophy should be an aim for one of the top half teams, which we think we are. It’s a tough balance for nuno to strike as I get the desire for fringe players to have game time, and to avoid injuries, but I’d have liked a couple more first teamers to help us progress - in all honesty, probably one of the midfield two and Jimenez would have been my additions and could have made a big difference.

I'm fine with last nights selection, but If we were to draw a PL or a Top Championship side in the FA Cup and we're in or around the same position as we are now in the table I'd be disappointed if that was the side.

I have to say that my view is that the FA cup, champions league places are the benchmark for the top 6.

The other 14 are in for 1 europa league place and the carabao cup and 3 of those are getting relegated.

If you are already in europe I see the carabao cup as a distraction and understand putting out your reserves where possible. If youre not then you have to go to win it, us included. I dont think our team was weak last night. I think our bench was weak. U;ltimately it was clear our midelfield wiothput both Moutinho and Neces wasnt creative enough. Bringing Moutinho on for the last 20 proabably would have won the game without spot kicks. We will never know. Its a free Euro league place opportunity missed. Gutted? No. Disappointed. Yes

Since 2005:

Man Utd x 4
Chelsea x 3
Man City x 3
Tottenham
Liverpool
Birmingham
Swansea

It's not very often that non-top six teams win the competition anyway.

Yes but the finalists since 2005 include
Wigan Bradford Sunderland, Southampton, Aston Villa and Cardiff as well as Swansea and Birmingham as winners. I am sure that the supporters of each of those clubs has very fond memories of their league cup final outing much the same as we reminisce about 1974 and 1980. I am also confident that Wolves full strength 2018 would beat ALL those teams in that list.

Let me put it this way if we were to have won the league cup this season and finished 10th I would be happier than not winning it and qualifying for the europa league in 7th. Same outcome but with a trophy.

Not sure I'd particularly reminisce over losing a final personally. Sounds shit.

Didn't see any of this so going on comments on here & what I listened to.

Our defensive backups are more than competent - Ruddy, Vinagre, Hause & Dendocker would not give me palpitations if we needed to use them & the lack of cover for Doherty can be dealt with by moving Jonny & using Vinagre.

Our midfield without at least one of Moutinho or Neves is not enough (suspect that we all knew that anyway)

Up front Leo is not the player we started with for whatever reason & may well be the position we need to strengthen in Jan. Traore is still an impact sub, but good to see Cav back out though he will need a couple of games to get really back to form. He did show enough to have some confidence that he will.

Always want to win (& this game was winnable) so a couple of extra first team players (1 in midfield & Jimenez up front) could well have done that. However can fully understand why Nuno didn't do this - we are only 6 games in and cannot have potential injuries to key players at this stage (we saw what happened to Gray & hopefully it is not too bad).

The FA Cup comes a bit later & we will be better placed to assess our position in this league then - if we are still doing well then hope we have a more serious tilt at that competition.

Erm... I seriously doubt that :icon_lol:

You do realise we won the final in 1974 and 1980?
