Coronavirus

PHE documents now suggesting an 80% infection rate is expected and we could be looking at nearly 8m hospitalised over the next year.

Those are pretty grim numbers, that’s 1/7 people in hospital. If the mortality rate is 1% that could 450,000 dead.
More than half of the amount of British servicemen lost in WW2.

Yeah thought it was down to the flu, just cannot for the life of me remember the news totting up casualties on the hour, i mean its only 5 years ago and 28,000 is pretty damn shocking.

So much doomsaying going on that it's not hard to understand people just blowing the whole thing off.

It's going to take our Cabinet some time to adjust to being normal politicians after the last 4-5 years.

You can't just bat away valid questions or criticism with banal soundbites for a kick off (this is all they've done for ages), and unattributed off the record briefings to pet journalists are out as well.

We'll see who can actually do the job other than being promoted beyond their abilities because they'll do as they're told by whoever happens to be running the show. And the PM himself needs to stop being such a lazy, feckless cunt and be shown to be leading from the front. Of course with him it's the habit of a lifetime.

Appearance and delivery matters a lot here, something Fat Al should know given that he's supposedly such a fan of Churchill. Once again he's done a disappearing act since Thursday. Now you might say that he himself isn't going to fix things and any number of statements from him don't provide a cure, but this is a time of national crisis and they tend to define PMs. Given that we already know that he's twice sloped off to a country house in the last month or so for no reason and when things actually needed doing, it's not a good look. This is a situation that is developing every single day, he needs to be on top of it every single day at least in the short term. Turns out that leading a country isn't a part time jolly where you pop up a couple of times a week, shout a catchphrase and tell a few rubbish jokes.

The science behind what they're doing might well be right, show us it then. Not "we'll tell you later" because at the moment, I can't necessarily believe you as you have a proven track record of lying (I still haven't forgotten those "excruciating detail" reports on the impact of EU withdrawal - turns out they hadn't even done them and when they were ordered by law to show their homework, they'd crammed it all into a couple of hours and C&Pd Wiki all over the place). If you're sending people out to talk to Marr or whatever, make sure that the message is consistent. Explain every step clearly and make sure the stance is unified. You can't be seen to be changing tack every few days, strategies last longer than that.

If you want the public to do as you say then you must do better on a PR front, quickly. The Chinese population will pretty much ask how high when their overlords ask them to jump. Doesn't work here and we won't be sending the Army out, welding people in their homes, etc etc. We cannot afford social disorder on top of this.

While I'm not the biggest Johnson fan in the world he is a politician and they are all (given the odd exception) showboating liars that cannot be trusted.

Firstly, I agree with your sentiment in respect of normal politicians but then again before the swamp was drained Westminster was wholly undemocratic/unrepresentative of the electorate until public anger and feeling was demonstrated quite remarkably a few months back. Coronavirus - There is no exact science but there is plenty of hypothesis yet unproven. Any comparison town to town, city to city and country to country is flawed. Nobody can be blinded with science because they simply cannot give an accurate forecast as to how this will play out. All they know with any certainty is that if you are of a certain age with underlying health conditions you've got one hell of a problem. They don't know how many people are infected, they don't know how many people in recent weeks have had the virus and not reported it and therefore any stat is largely meaningless at this point. They know how many people have been treated/ hospitalised and they know how many of those people have died.

He was quite clear that the situation can change day to day and I suspect much of this is driven by public backlash fueled by sensationalist headlines in the media scaring the shit out of everybody. You have an over-seventies revolt many of whom cannot comprehend that social distancing might actually save their lives and a scant disregard by many who fail to grasp the economic apocalypse the world is sitting upon ( because it's the govt's fault ! ). This is no time for political point-scoring.

Getting forgetful but....
These 28,000 deaths in 2015, did that virus have a name at all?
Did the news do daily death/hospitalised counts back then?
I should, but i cant recall a massive panic.

Occured due to a failure to provide an effective vaccine that year. In Lab Tests it was 34% effective rather than 50%
24K were over 75's. If there had been no vaccine that year I calculate the death toll could have been closer to 80K

I love sport, but have probably just taken it for granted as something that fills and enriches my weekend, and life - yes, it may seem trivial when set against other, graver matters, but Sport, I miss you so badly - can’t wait until we’re reunited once more.

Was that year's flu worldwide too?
Im just shocked that i must have totally ignored any news and panic that was happening at the time.
Judging by disasters such as Hillsborough and Aberfan, the media should have been talking about days of multiple deaths for years later.

Thankfully Boris is copying someone else's homework

I feel football is a comfort blanket. Whatever shit is going on in the world football is always there for us, an act of escapism. We look at the fixture list and find a game to watch on TV, we listen to the discussions on the radio or on forums and it is always there.

Now though, suddenly its not and it creates a void. I think its easy for casual and non fans to dismiss football as only a game and not important but to us it is. Suddenly we do not have the prospect of a Wolves match to attend or a game we can watch on TV and it feels weird. Like a close season but without transfers or a known end.

Oh dear. Our supervisor in the warehouse at work has rang in with possible symptoms. Fever and feeling unwell. It's all kicking off here with the Union and H&S rep, as nothing has been done that was promised in terms of extra sanitisers at all entrances/exits.

Son in Law phoned up to say they were queueing across Aldi car park to get in this morning and the daughter needs eggs (she bakes cakes for a living), so I went up to Tesco at Heath Hayes, hardly anyone in ! The only thing they hadn't got in was toilet rolls, the weird milk cartons and my boxes of Diet coke, the one thing that did restore my faith in humanity was there was not a massive choice of eggs but the caged chicken eggs remained untouched on the shelf :)

First post in this thread - have been watching it all develop from afar. Not sure what to think on the subject. I (probably irresponsibly) had quite a big night out on Saturday for my birthday in Leeds. Everywhere was packed - every single pub/bar/club we went to was packed full of people drinking and having fun. You'd have never of thought there was an issue. I see it from both points of view. You can hibernate in your house and try to shut yourself away from the world until it's all "blown over", or you can carry on as normal. Personally, I am probably somewhere in the middle of those two things. I certainly won't be having a massive night out again any time soon, but equally, those people panic buying things such as toilet roll and then shutting themselves off from the world outside are being a little too OTT. I also appreciate that it depends on everyone's own personal circumstances. I don't have any elderly relatives, for example, but I do have two young children.

From a work point of view, there's no chance our office is closing any time soon. There's 12 of us working here and it's a private company so my boss has no need to close down, unless we all come down with symptoms, of course. As far as working in the recruitment sector goes, I have actually noticed an upturn in business since this all started. One of my biggest clients is a massive facilities company who do a lot of the cleaning for universities and colleges in London - and from today they've asked us to add an extra 3 x domestic staff at all sites to clean door handles, stair banisters etc. We've also been asked to source staff on other contracts as replacements for people that have gone off sick or self quarantining. On the flip side, I had a meeting cancelled at a potential new client today, as they are "limiting the number of external visitors to site", which I think will now become the norm for the time being.

Interesting times ahead. I'm not quite sure what to make of it all, if honest. But the mass hysteria and panic buying etc doesn't help anyone. We need to follow the guidelines from PHE as best as we can and attempt to continue to some degree of normality, where we can. Perhaps easier said than done (especially when they start shutting schools down).

I’ve suddenly got 7 days off, was due to go to 4 contracts this week but they’ve all cancelled none essential visitors.
Luckily our business has a large overdraft if needed but if this trend continues could have a serious headache in 3 months.

Place I work for, transport for the community, horrible boss, has cancelled transport to day care centres from this morning,I don't think we've cancelled it,but have been told to by Sandwell council.
Also bloke at works wife has been sent home from Asda Darlaston, with flu like symptoms.

It's clear and understandable that we don't have enough ventilators, we need companies to mobilise and help with the production of that.

So, with this in mind why don't we introduce the more stringent measures now, flatten the curve immediately and give ourselves more time to prepare for the peak? As surely getting ventilators into production at places like JCB will take time to sort out?

It's not just ventilators either, we need to train medics to use them.

The people who are saying stuff like "it's just a cold" and "only old people will die" are starting to piss me off

2hrs into working from home and my wife is already doing my head in.

It's going to be a looooooooong two weeks....
