Coronavirus

Given they have stopped testing people that aren't in at risk categories only the second number is relevant now

The did a shed loads of tests yesterday though.

About 3000 or so. Just under 250 new cases - so call it about 8% positive, which is the highest yet. This is of course to be expected as they are now testing those showing symptoms rather than those with possible symptoms.

Still grim news.

Who is he? Is he an epidemiologist? Because I've just read a report from an epidemiology professor from Harvard who when he read the government's strategy thought it was satire because it's so badly wrong.

Edit: I've read this page of the thread backwards and therefore just seen the link posted by Templeton.

Italy will be a really good example of what we're not trying to do.

We've got the "look after the elderly thing" firmly in people's minds plus we can try to lock them away if we need whilst the rest of us cough and sneeze our way through. I haven't done the numbers but if you can 80% of the over 70s out of Italy's numbers I'd guess the amount of people needing hospital treatment significantly reduces.

And in the next week or so Italy's numbers for new cases & deaths will be significantly reduced and they'll lift quarantine and start all over again.

I honestly think our govt is doing the right thing. It's going to be really, really tough for a few months - maybe 3 or 4

I'm hoping he is,I've £20 at 14-1 on it,the money would be nice about now,I could buy a toilet roll with it

368 more deaths in Italy today. Worse than the worst day in Wuhan.

The queue for pulling that trigger could be pretty long. He really should be assassinated pretty shortly.

We could sell tickets. The most terrifying man on the planet. I joked about the the lack of a Randall Flagg earlier in the piece. The Walkin Dude isn't dark, he's fucking orange.

All pubs in Ireland to close from midnight tonight until at least 29th March.
This is where I start panic buying Old Speckled Hen before it runs out.

The annual average mortality rate from flu in the UK is 17,000. If we take that and divide it by say 180 (6 month season which is generous as the flu season is generally a lot shorter) it gives a figure of 94 deaths per day.
The mortality rste in the 2014/15 season was around 28,000.
Some way to go before you hit those figures.
So either they are expecting a lot more deaths than that or there is some political motive behind it all.

The right move.

Did you see the video from last night in Temple Bar? Hundreds of morons out and about, carrying on as usual.
We had dinner reservations in town last night which, after much debate, we cancelled. Probably being over cautious but if we want to get this right as a nation, we've all got to play our part.

Does anybody know of anybody who has been tested positive for Corona virus?

Seeing as 37,746 out of the population have been tested wouldn’t be so much of a surprise if people hadn’t

I wasn’t allowed to go back into the stadium at work last Wednesday because someone had walked into the clinic (built into the stadium) and tested positive however

Yes. One guy at work. I also know that Squeeze knows through a friend one who lost a parent yesterday.

Yep definitely, to be fair most of the bars up here said they were closing early today before the government announcement, between worry about their staff and having moral scruples felt it wasnt worth the hassle.
Plus what happened in temple bar think tipped the balance then whoever's in their right mind goes to temple bar I'd a fuckwit anyway.

Noticable up here is the difference in attitude between people in the republic and the north, this weekend we have plenty coming over the border to their holiday homes, no issue keeps the place going, but this weekend heard several times that the northerners dont seem to care about the corona, seems to be different messages from different governments.

Nope not yet, but don't suppose it will be long, in fact up till 9am today there were no recorded cases in our post code area (Telford and Wrekin).
My missus is a bit concerned as its our weekly shop tomorrow and there have been shortages locally today due to morons, we only ever buy enough food to last the week so might have to hunter/gathering by Wednesday
