Coronavirus

My dad who is 75, this week dumped his partner of a decade or so in her mid 60s who did all his shopping, cooking and washing because she was boring. He lives on his own. Timing dad, timing.

An Italian doctor who worked at Shenzhen Hospital in China was appointed by the Chinese government to participate in the hive study group of Wuhan or Corona-Virus pneumonia. He wrote a very interesting article, which is summarised below:

- If a person has a runny nose and has phlegm, he is not infected with the Corona virus, because pneumonia gives a dry cough without a runny nose. This is the easiest way to locate it.
On the other hand it is good to know that the Wuhan virus or corona virus is not heat resistant and dies at a temperature of 26 to 27 degrees. Therefore, drink plenty of hot water such as tea and herbs. It's not a cure, but it's good for the body. Drinking hot water is effective for killing all viruses. Try not to drink cold or frozen fluids. Expose yourself to the sun if it's winter.

- The virus is quite large (the cell has a diameter of about 400-500 nm), so any normal mask (not only the mask 3M & N95) can filter it. However, when an infected person sneezes in front of you, it will spread about 3 meters before falling to the ground. That is, it hovers in the air.

- When the virus falls on a metal surface, it will live for at least 12 hours. So remember that if you come into contact with any metal surface, wash your hands thoroughly with soap.

- The virus can remain active in tissues for 6-12 hours. Regular laundry detergent kills the virus. Winter clothes that do not need daily washing should be placed in the sun to kill the virus.

Information about symptoms of pneumonia caused by corona virus:

- First it will infect the throat, then you will feel a dry sore throat that will last 3 to 4 days.

- Then the virus will merge with the nasal fluid, enter the trachea and enter the lungs causing Wuhan's pneumonia. This process will take 5 to 6 days.

- A condition of pneumonia, high fever and breathing difficulties will follow. Nasal congestion is not like normal nasal congestion. You'll feel like you're drowning in the water. It is important to seek medical attention immediately if you have this feeling.

On prevention:
- The most common way to get infected is not to touch things in a public place such as railings, door handles, handles on the bus, etc., so you should often wash your hands. The virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but many things can happen in these 5-10 minutes, such as rubbing your eyes, touching your mouth or face, etc.

- It is recommended to gargling with Betadine gargle to eliminate or minimize germs while still in the throat (before moving on to the lungs).
Maybe the new corona virus shows no signs of infection for many days, so how do you know if someone gets infected? The latest information is that the incubation period may be up to 28 days before the symptoms of the crown appear.
By the time a person has a fever/cough and goes to the hospital, the lungs can be 50% in fibrosis and maybe it is too late.
Taiwan's experts give us a simple self-control that we can do every morning:

Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds. If you do it without coughing, without suffocation or a bad sensation, etc., it is proof that there is no fibrosis in the lungs, a basic indication that there is no infection.
At critical moments, please look at a fresh air environment every morning.

We must all ensure that our mouth and throat are wet, NEVER dry. Drink minimal water every 15 minutes. WHY??? Because even if the virus enters your mouth ... drinking water or other liquids will transport it through the esophagus to the stomach.
There, stomach acids will kill the virus. If you do not drink enough water regularly the virus can enter the trachea and enter the lungs. And that's going to be very dangerous.

That looks like pure Facebook bollocks to me

Spain is in total lockdown, no bars or restaurants can open.
You can only leave your house to go to medical centres, chemists food shops.
Massive Fines for walking around if you cannot explain satisfactory where you are going

Think I'm going to stop taking any notice of any media, so much contradictory stuff coming out. Maybe just watch/read the statements of the official boffins. Last night read a piece on BBC website that hundreds of university scientists had written to the govt stating they were doing it all wrong delaying social distancing and it would cause many more deaths. Further down the article it mentioned that the scientists were from many areas of science like Maths etc although NONE were experts in the field of the spread of diseases
This is completely the wrong thing to do imo.
Yes, in reality know one is going to be able to definitively map out what will happen. What we are hearing is theory. Theory is laden with assumption, bias and ideology.
This is compounded by the fact that we're getting the information second hand, with big abbreviations, and even more assumptions.

We need to constantly review the best potential empirical evidence available, reviewing all these theories being posited, all the time. Updating our information, sources, and the quality of these to enable us to make the best decisions possible for ourselves, in the circumstances, given the information available to us.

That means not blindly accepting specific lines trotted out by certain journalists, outlets etc. As time passes, some clarity will appear, as well as other areas of uncertainty.

On the parents thing, both my parents have long term health issues. Dad in particular is exceptionally high risk.

I already haven't seen them for over 2 weeks. Mums birthday was thursday, and we spoke on the phone. They were supposed to be over today, but we postponed. Mothers day next weekend too.

They're already well stocked food wise, so it would only be perishables they would need, and if I had to do that, I could shop for them and leave it in their porch or something.

Well I have 10 days left roaming around outside apparantly - due to go away (albeit within the UK) 2 days before my birthday so would be expected to self isolate half way through. The place we are going has emailed to confirm that I can rearrange the date at no cost up to the day before so leaving the decision till next weekend. Have been keeping out of large gatherings for the last week anyway & fortunately have no underlying health conditions.

The other problem will be with the charity I help run as we have a shop selling/hiring aids & supplies for the disabled/elderly from incontinence pads right up the wheelchairs. Roughly 75% of our volunteers who man the shop are over 70 themselves so we may struggle to keep it open. Given that what we sell is more specialised items that you can't buy in a chemists or the pharmacies (we have always had a policy of not competing with them as we will always be cheaper as we are not for profit and only look to break even). Also 95% of our income comes through shop sales so will have financial issues if it go on for months (unless our landlord is prepared to be even kinder than they have been in the past as this is our biggest expense). We do have reserves, but nothing is inexhaustible. A lot of our regular clients don't visit themselves but have younger family members or other carers collect supplies for them, but that won't help if we can't open.

And how long do you do this for - this situation is not going to magically resolve itself in 2 weeks time. Think that I should just defer my birthday and remain at 69 for the next few months!

went to the local supermarket down at the harbour for a few essentials, sugar, milk spuds today and found all the tavernas, bars, ouzeri and coffee shops are shut as of last night for a minimum of two weeks with serious fines involved if they are caught open, we have between 300 to 400 people in the village depending on whether the young are in Athens working.
No one is out on the streets, and even though this is an economic catstrophe for most of them , they all agree, and bless them for that.
The fear is the local houses will be full of friends having a cypro and some scram, but at least they are giving it a serious go.

I’ve been in London today and it’s amazing how many people aren’t even remotely trying to be careful about what they’re touching or how they’re behaving. People in general couldn’t give a shit about this virus, just assume they won’t get it and will be fine if they do.

I went down there on Wednesday expecting paranoia to be rife but there was no such panic, couple of commuters in masks and that was about it. Headteacher at the school we went to didn't have any concern, handshakes all round, if anything we seemed more prepared as the out of towners and we weren't the ones responsible for a school full of kids.

One of the girls in my team has a son who’s been off school since Tuesday with a temperature and cough, spent the whole time in bed - three confirmed cases in the local hospital, but they don’t want to test for mild cases.

Our place have now stopped people coming to work who’ve travelled to Europe recently, only one down in our place but as a site we’ll start feeling the pinch soon. Our Italian suppliers are already on lockdown which is disrupting us badly in certain areas and now we’ll start losing bodies as well. In the grand scheme of things we’re lucky enough we’ll be able to recover but the strain it will put in the workforce will be massive.
