Coronavirus

Suggests you can get it more than once. That messes with the herd immunity theory rather badly.

I think it takes a few weeks for the virus to completely disappear. If we weren't building up at least short term immunity then the recovered folk would be catching it again pretty quickly

That’s the thing. Immunity over a short term is not uncommon when having an illness. Longer term is going to take longer to understand with this new infection.

Anyway, Health Secretary has just announced home shielding (translation: compulsory self isolation at home) for over 70s is coming. As these people are the least likely to do internet food shopping are we proposing that they all starve?

What do you suggest then, we let them roam free in Morrisons with everyone else ? A bit like a pandemic lottery ?

They are no more likely to catch it or carry it. They are more likely to die from it. However, if they have no access to food for months they are pretty fucking certain to die from that.

I'd like to think enough people will put aside their own selfishness atm and offer help to any elderly/vulnerable folk. Not a big problem to do a bit of shopping for them? Its probably naive on my part but I still believe in the overall goodness of most people

In general they will.

Street I live on has a community WhatsApp group that is usually the most annoying thing in the world but over the weekend plenty of messages offering help to anyone that needs items getting etc.

Me and my missus have started to make a list of local elderly who we know don't have any family at hand

The government can't think of every single thing. They're protecting the over 70s which is a great move. People are going to have to look out for each other, look after neighbours etc.

My dad is over 70 so I'm already planning to do his shop for him as are my next door neighbours who I've already offered to get things for if they need it

The scenes at O’Hare are insane. Queues of over 7 hours and everyone forced into a small confined space. Utterly stupid.

Good job mass gatherings of people have been banned,or you'd be seriously worrying about catching it

It's a lottery now Paul. The government wants people to catch it, but they don't think it's spread enough yet to close schools and request self isolation etc . The problem is if it takes hold quicker than expected then we don't have beds in hospitals to treat the relatively healthy let alone the most vulnerable.
One of the scientists who signed the letter said that even if the vulnerable are self isolating you could be looking at there only being enough beds for the healthy under 40's to have the intensive care beds. Huge numbers will be very ill even if 80+% have relatively mild symptoms.

Just tried to go to Morrison’s. Car park completely full and at least forty cars driving round looking for a space. Ridiculous.

Oh I agree, but from reading various things this does seem the best option, I don't think you need to be a scientist to have realised hospital capacities would be an issue, they were before any of this. My brother has just beat me to take my Mom shopping, he's got there and she wants to go to Marks & Spencers, ha sucker !!

At 6pm last night you were ok in my local store as long as you wanted easter eggs or alcohol.

I went up about 15 minutes after opening time. Only needed some sugar and a bottle of vino to bung a glass of in the gravy and the rest in me while cooking a la Keith Floyd. I can only assume they were queuing up to get in from about 9 this morning. Fuck knows what the queues at the tills would have been like.

Friend of mine flying to Australia as we speak, lands there sometime tomorrow, just in time to self isolate for 14 days as per Aussie government advice,he's only there for a ten day holiday! To say he's pissed off is an understatement

Just been talking to my mum about their plans - she’s 70 and gets very bad chest infections as she still smokes; my step-dad, same age, has had strokes due to high blood pressure. She says she will not at all stay at home and has no plans to change anything. It’s incredibly frustrating and very arrogant. Took all my will power to not shout at her for being so stupid.
