Wolves 2-0 Southampton: Verdict Thread

I had forgotten what it feels like to win! My journey back from London is a happy one. Van Gogh & Wolves!

Disjointed performance but Saints offered nothing going forward and we prospered.
First goal was quality and then it was a turgid first half. Second half a moment of brilliance from Cunha and it's done.
Their goal was correctly disallowed. We get a clean sheet.

Work horse performance from Gomes & Lemina. Made a difference.

Still nowhere near good enough but a performance that at least gives us hope we can beat teams at the bottom. We sure ain't beating mid and top table teams based on that and goals will still flow into our net because of a basic lack of discipline by Ait-Nouri in particular.

Overall, happy with the first win of the season. Happy we can score goals. Going to enjoy my beer this evening. Be a strange feeling.

Well, we needed to win. And we did win. Can't say it was especially convincing as we were outright poor in the first half and there's still little semblance of a joined-up plan. "Give it to Cunha" is not a plan.

But win we did and from 2-0 it was never in much doubt. They are a poor, poor team at this level and Russell Martin is absolutely miles out of his depth - but you have to take the points where you can get them.

Still far more questions than answers. We still don't use Strand Larsen anywhere close to properly. We're still bringing Guedes on to be absolutely wretched all the time. André seems miles out of the picture for no reason. We don't inspire confidence at the back, we don't keep the ball well, we're still playing a formation which isn't right.

A win though. It's been a while. Just enjoy that and don't think too much about it is probably the best course of action for now.

A win is a win, but at what cost? Does it make relegation any more or less likely? That's probably a conversation for tomorrow.

Southampton are fucking shit. They battered us in the first half, it was embarrassing in plan and execution. Second half was better, more proactive without the ball and played 15 yards farther up the pitch, though it'd be a stretch to say we played well, we just stopped them from playing. Dawson was excellent, as was Cunha, without whom we'd have lost today.

I can't say I'm enjoying the win, but I'm enjoying that we haven't lost and I'm not angry, so will take that as a rare relief.

Unbeaten in 3...the PLAN is working.

Enjoy the win, enjoy not being bottom and come back in a few days to discuss the obvious papering over the cracks.

First half, utter dog shit. Second half, especially the first 15 minutes was a huge improvement...

Wasn't hard to improve on the first half really. Credit where it's due though...

Much better second half, press lead to a second goal. Game was managed well from that point - by our standards.

I'd still sack Gary though. Wasn't the commanding performance he needed to retain his position in my opinion...

Get him gone. As long as an upgrade is obtainable, we don't want another another Terry Connor, Steve Davis situation.

We had to win and we did win. They didn't have a shot on target so in a very narrow sense you can say the end justified the means, we all know it's bigger than that though. We have one top class player, they don't have any, that was the difference today, but it's not sustainable.

I thought we were lucky with both calls on the goals. I don't think it's enough of a foul on Semedo for VAR to get involved, if it's given on the pitch then fair enough. When it is the Dawson foul is too. Inconsistency that just for once went our way.

Anyone else notice?
From what i saw on my telly, gon spent more time away from his feckin tablet 2nd half and we played much better.
Watch the game Gon, get a true feeling what's going on, and shove yer tablet up your arse.

Really frustrating for me, travelling from the south coast to the game, my train was cancelled at Reading (of all places) due to signalling problems up the line.

I gave up in the end and went home to the pub. So disappointed at missing the game.

Good win. It’s all that matters at present.

I like Gary O’Neil. He will be a successful manager I think, possibly not in the EPL, where he is inexperienced, but for now we need to back him and the players as much as we can.

For me that is what supporting the club in adversity is all about and I don’t care much what anyone makes of that.

Was just going to post similar.....ironically it's the result that has probably sealed our relegation
Had this discussion on the build up thread. I agree GON will take us down, we have a better chance of staying up with 3 points today than him being sacked though. We'd appoint a Lampard, Edwards type probably not in time for Fulham and have 3 points less. If you guaranteed me a Potter I'd have taken a defeat, but I don't think he'd touch us.

Incidentally Fulham are currently 6th. Easy game though la.
