Wolves 0-1 Arsenal: Verdict Thread

0,4,7,5,4,2,0,6,14 - would you sign this player or would assume the 14 is an outlier? Players build up like this all the time, they don't come along and just score 20 every season. Of course some revert to type, but many kick on and put up better numbers again. There was no reason inherently why Guedes shouldn't have been one of those guys based on his overall profile.
My friends in Valencia gave me a reason in fairness…

Well the inherent reasoning is that he's weak, awful technically, slow and doesn't try. All of which you could have known by watching one game.

Would you say Seyi Olofinjana was a fantastic goalscoring midfielder because he got into double figures for us once (when we basically paid him to hang around the six yard box for half a season) or would you say he was a lumbering shitehawk because other than that, he never scored more than 6 in a season and indeed frequently scored 0?

Guedes was always an awful, awful, awful signing. I cannot stress that enough.

Actually thought we did ok, even at 11 v 11.

We're maybe 2 3 players from upper Mid Table.

Happy with the performance
Going out on a limb with Glasgowolf here as I thought we did okay as well and deserved a point, but we don’t get scrawny points do we!

Restricted them to very little first half and grew into the game. The sending off was a bonus but from the NB he took Doc out blatantly and fair play to Oliver he was big enough to make the right call, sad that then 10 players had to bully around him without yellow card in sight…remember Southampton a couple of years back 😏 which led to some strange decisions, most going against us, the shanked cross from Rice the pick of them were Oliver gave a corner!

But our Achilles heel again was not taking advantage of the extra man second half and allowed Arse to manage the game. True to form they were targeting Gomes and every time he went near them they went to ground. VP should have seen this and hooked him earlier.

We were starting to move the ball around until that point, after that it was only gonna need one chance and they took it, we didn’t.

Defensively the thought we coped well and Agbadou is an absolute beast, although his distribution needs a lot of work, but think that we have a player there if we can find another quality CH. Bueno isn’t the CH we need tbh, but who else do we have at this point?

Sarabia is a waste of a shirt, which requires Gomes and Cunha to work harder, and bringing JRB on was a down grade, bin them both

We need to just stay in touch as it looks like 30 points will keep you up this season so some how we have to dig 5 or 6 wins from somewhere….with my gold and black glasses on😎

If we end up with 30 points I’m certain we’ll be playing in the championship next season.
Get to April/May and you get the desperation for points by those trying to stay up playing those on the beach. 34 will probably see you safe, said it many times ordinarily we should be dead and buried as we simply shouldn’t be good enough to come 17th but somehow we’re still clinging to it.

I think we have players who have performed far worse than Guedes this season. That doesn't mean I think Guedes has been, or is, very good. He has contributed more than Hwang, Bellegarde, Forbs and Sarabia, and looked a better player than any of them. 🤷‍♂️

I agree with this, but it also highlights why we are in serious relegation trouble.

Far too many bad players who have to play because we don't have many - if any - other options.

Guedes is absolute mince, but hasn't been our worst player this season. What a depressing sentence.

I'm going to go on my Xbox now to shoot annoying Americans on CoD. That might cheer me up.

His recent performances have been absolutely awful!

I don't know how you can't see this, he played sort of ok against Man Utd which is a month ago now, what since?
I'm not arguing he's been great though. Just that his game might be more suited to the way we want to play over the other sub-standard options. And he's not slow either, I have no idea why you keep saying that. He has a decent burst of pace when he wants to make runs.

He's got decent movement, he can run the channels in behind and make forward runs off the shoulder of defenders. He at least puts the required amount of effort in even if he does chicken out of the occasional tackle or his touch lets him down. But that's hardly to be held against him when he's surrounded by even worse.

I just think he can offer us something different at the minute if he actually tries. Which is still debatable as to what you'll get as we've seen with Hwang today.

I mean, this thread seems to be discussing "would you like punching once (Guedes) or twice (Bellegarde)?" The answer is neither...

Been stated before but Agbadou is the only player to come out with any credit. He may be a bit agricultural but he seems to be able to do his job defensively and the only player improving on his performances over the past couple of games.

Tactically, woof - this Arsenal team are a Stoke City with good players, even then they had 3 or 4 very good chances before scoring. VP got the second half approach wrong and left the bringing on of Rodrigo and Guedes (🤮) far too late.

I've actually been today. Spare ticket going and after the week I've had, a release has been needed.

I'm not sure I've seen a collection of players so lacking in the basics.

Bueno can't jump, Sa, Hwang and JRB have been done to death. There's no bottle among them. JSL looked piss weak. I'm willing to cut some slack on JSL because he might have been carrying a knock which has popped today, and better strikers than him will be dominated by Saliba and Gabriel. If he has been carrying a knock then his minutes ought to have been managed better though perhaps.

Lastly, after the sending off, Somedo was getting shoved and none of his teammates were anywhere near him, I don't want loose cannons wading in but look after each other.

On the sending off, I remember Leroy Fer getting a similar sending off in the cup v Swansea, that was overturned on appeal, I suspect this one will too.

I've got growing concerns about VP. I don't know what we're trying to do when we attack, the players are so pedestrian and offer no movement

Agbadou was a bright spot, passing is still pretty rustic but he was very good. It's a shame he has to half pirouette to kick the ball due to being on the wrong side.

Tredman and I briefly discussed cumulative fatigue in the pub earlier - I think JSL has been struggling with this following the comments about him not being fit enough.

Having no viable alternative to him also hasn't helped. Looking forward to the next 8 weeks of Hwang or Guedes as a replacement...

I'm not sure how JSL can be fatigued, unless he's got a second job on a building site laying bricks. More like he's been upset by the new gaffa and he's developed a 'bit of a pull'.

Headline. We only got beat 1-0 and Agbadou had his best game yet. Nobody else comes out with much credit, Sa perhaps for a decent save but he had little to do otherwise. Arsenal were there to be beaten, with 11 men and 10. I don’t think we ever looked like we were going to win.

Bueno just isn’t very good. Doherty isn’t a right sided centre back.
Gomes and Andre work hard but offer little creativity.
RAN doesn’t even flatter to deceive anymore.
Semedo showed he could run down the flank and cause problems. Did it once, then never again.
JSL. FFS. Won nothing in the air, didn’t hold the ball up. Got injured.
Sarabia, tidily ineffective. Should have done better with his chance but I didn’t expect him to.
Hwang. If he’s not scoring what’s the point? He not scoring, no point.
Cunha. Played the game the way he wanted to play it, not for the team. It was almost as if he had taken the instruction t9 track back so literally he decided to stay there. He waited for the ball, rarely went looking for it. More often took the wrong option. He is not the player who until recently was a joy to watch…and played with joy.

Agree on RAN he’s been a huge disappointment this season only just behind Lemina in a drop off contest. Playing more like the player that was deemed surplus by LOP. Absolute lack of competition for a place doesn’t help either

We would be raging at the ref if a red was shown to one of our players for a challenge like that

Definitely a yellow as it was cynical but no way a red. Agree that if that was us, we'd have been furious.

I hate agreeing with Lego Head Arteta but he's every right to be angry with that decision.
