VAR shouldn’t exist. Although I think it probably does get more decisions right than wrong there remains too many issues with it and all it has done is shifted the talking points for the benefit of TV audiences.
In the stadium yesterday….we scored, everyone had taken turns to congratulate Podence, the goal music had finished and they had announced the scorer. Then the flag goes up. I had to wait for an internet connection to find out who was offside, there was no indication that VAR was in play. As it happens, it was the right decision and Raul was offside by a clear margin and had clearly attempted to play the ball.
As for Kante. It looked obvious in real time, it looked obvious in the highlights. He moved his arm out where it shouldn’t have been and the ball hit his arm. If it was a penalty against Moutinho then Kante’s was a red card all day long. I don’t even know if it was checked by VAR because I was in the stadium and we don’t get told.
VAR is a stain on the game, it hasn‘t added anything…just shifted the focus of any controversy.
I don't think there's any benefit for any spectactors, regardless of their viewpoint, in theory the only beneficiaries are the clubs getting more correct decisions, though in practice it's not always the case.
If I'm sat watching a game at home, or even listening on the radio as I was for the first half yesterday, then it's still shit to have a 5 minute break for a bit of admin when all I want to do is watch, or listen, to someone football. That's a negative impact for me without a doubt.
Though as you say it's certainly worse in the stadium, at least I'm informed what's going on and the final decision when I'm sat at home whereas you're left in the dark at the ground. I think it's just more of a negative for live viewers rather than positive/negative for TV compared to live.
