The wolves Way

Best never spend more than £2m on anyone ever again as Roger Johnson was rubbish.

I am saying Wolves have a bigger and more dedicated and loyal away following than Real Madrid.

What relevance has that got even if true when Real Madrid can signs players for 100 million on 250 000 a week and we get gazumped by clubs like Bournemouth? They can afford to sign players who are only after money as the biggest club in the world , we can't match other championship sides for wages so I fail to see what point you're making unless you are implying we should be able to compete as we had more fans at Crawley last year than they had at the Nou camp due to ticket allocations. Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world and have a far bigger away following than we will ever have.. are you sober?

The clubs plans were to go to a 40k stadium, I don't think the idea was to be a big fish in the championship. Premiership is where I want my club to be. I will take years of instability if needed. Lets not forgot we are one of not many British teams to make a european final. That is the level we once managed to reach. I don't understand the point of view of anyone who thinks its unrealistic to at least dream.

My point is Real Madrid for all their glory, their fans do not travell to away matches. Wolves follow their team through thick and thin. I have watched Real Madrid play against Getafe, Raya Vallecano and Atletico Madrid, away from home. All those teams are in the city of Madrid and their weren't over a 1000 Real Madrid fans, at any of those matches. Maybe there fans are bored with being the "biggest club in the world"? Wolves have won very little, since I was a kid, but we have a very loyal away support.

I may be wrong, but I don't think supporters in other countries follow their teams away from home to the same extent as English fans.

Varies from country to country, they do in Germany but they don't really in Spain or Italy.

Our away support is decent but nothing outstanding, we get equalled or outshone in that respect by clubs in this division let alone the biggest clubs in the country, a very strange point to be making.

That is the case in Spain, Frank. The only thing I could think of, where Wolves have something that we could come out on top with, against Real Madrid, was our away support.
Clutching at straws, I know.

We're lucky in England that you can be anywhere in the country within about 6 hours driving time. Not the case in Spain or Italy. In some cases you'd have to drive and then get a ferry, or fly.

To most of the main cities in Spain, the AVE does 300 klms per hour. I think this is the case in France too. I think English fans, in general love the culture of going to away matches, meeting your mates and having a beer. A different culture all together.

I suppose it depends on your definition of away support. In terms of numbers Spanish teams are notoriously poorly supported away from home including Barcelona compared to English and german teams particularly Munich and Dortmund, but in terms of fans that buy shirts worldwide claiming to be fans that obviously fill club coffers we can't compete allied to their 80 000 average home attendance. I've also seen a large number of Madrid fans sitting with shirts in the home end when playing away from home which is practically unheard of here unless it's in a neutral stand like at Craven cottage etc.

Apparently, last years U18s and the ones coming through are the best we've had in years, so will be interesting to see how good these lads are in a few years time.

These would all be kids we attracted to our facilities when we were in the Premier League right?

I don't enjoy watching Wolves get smashed in the prem week in week out but the prem is where we should aim to be to attract the best in youth and first team talent to play in a Wolves shirt and develop into a team that challenges for Europe and the FA/League cup.

I've enjoyed this thread more than any in a long time, good discussion, different opinions and not much ire.

Interesting thread.
It's now all about money. The last time we were a top team, competing in Europe, was over 40 years ago and so much has changed. The PL is now an elite, separate entity from the Football League and it attracts attention internationally, and is funded way, way more than the FL. Players, today, are mercenaries, employing agents and often have the earning potential that is more than their managers. Without the 'big bucks' of American, Russian or Arab owners, no football club can possibly sustain a top four place in the PL for long. I hate it, but it's true. Clubs like Manchester United and City are 'global brands' and football has long ceased to be a 'local' phenomenon, garnering largely local support. It is nigh on impossible for a second division (Championship) club to win promotion and follow that up with winning the first division (PL) title, like Derby County did in the 1970s. Wolves are still a 'big' club, but I do fear that the ambition and resources of M & M fall short of what we require to build a squad capable of winning the Premier League and storming Europe. We can all live in hope, though!

I don't think I'm interested in partaking in a league I have not the slightest hope of ever winning.

But by competing there you are more likely to develop a team that could win a cup more impressive than the Sherpa Van Trophy...

Me neither, TBH if we can finish top 8 again with a good run in one of the cups I think most would be fairly happy with that providing we can see some good football.

I guess it wouldn't be disastrous but we don't want to become what Sheffield United is in League 1! Not that the Championship isn't an exciting league to be in but we should always be aiming for more!
