The Video Games Thread II - The Resurrection

Think you've knocked the nail on the head there, mate. If it was a James Bond game (for example), I would be all over it as I'm a fan of James Bond. But I'm not a fan of Star Wars, so I'll be steering clear. Especially as I've really been enjoying Black Ops 3.

Of course, there was Goldeneye which was both a nerdgasm as well as a brilliant, genre defining game.

Buying a Wii U today for *ahem* the kids Christmas present.

Went to a Christening on Sunday and the parents of the baby being Christened had a Wii U set up with Mario Kart 8, Scribblenauts, Nintendo Land and the 3D Mario game. So for educational purposes, I had a few goes. Thought it was absolutely awesome - so much fun and so incredibly underrated. Not in a gimmicky sense, but as a genuinely fun games console. I think Nintendo have dropped a huge bollock marketing wise, and I tend to think that it started with the way they marketed the original Wii, followed by the fact that they never really established that the Wii U is a completely different system. Because it is!

It's a massive shame it seems to be on a downward spiral now but there's absolutely stacks of game time there and my kids (who weren't there on Sunday) will have hours of fun on it. If they can ever get their dad away from it, obviously....

Spent quite a few hours on Star Wars Battlefront last night and it is nerd porn. Probably the most polished, authentic game I've ever seen. The game modes vary in type as well as quality - the bog standard Team Deathmatch games are a bit boring and pointless, Supremacy is excellent, Dropzone a bit hit and miss but the Walker Assault mode is great. But my favourite is actually Fighter Squadron - basically Rebels v Empire in the sky, and if you're lucky, you might find a 'Hero' icon meaning you can fly the Falcon or Slave I (depending which side you're on) and they're fucking awesome fun. Just a shame each round doesn't tend to last longer than 5/6 minutes max.

I've not tried all the game modes yet but every one is easy to pick up and it never really feels like you've got no chance of scoring a kill, which I guess is fine if you're not a mega serious player, but if you put the hours in you'd want to have some kind of advantage over 'noobs' (I hate that word), but like the reviews said it's more of a Star Wars fan's game rather than a mega serious strategic gamer's game.

Oh and it would be a complete waste of time without Xbox Live.

There's stacks of gaming hours for me with it and it's top fun, but I think those reviews giving it 8/10 rather than the huge scores that the very best games are awarded is probably fair.

I still can't forgive them for ignoring the prequels entirely. Say what you like about the quality of the movies, but the aesthetic they introduced was undeniably cool.

Good god, it's miles better for leaving them out!!

While the prequels are bollocks there are ample opportunities for ace Battlefront action, had the makers chosen to do so

Battle of Naboo would work very well you would think, as would some scrap on Komino or Coruscant.

Not saying they wouldn't, but which would you choose? Hoth or Geonosis? Endor or Naboo? There's just no comparison.

Not sure what they have planned for the (very pricey) DLC but maybe they might feature? Personally, I hope they don't and if they are to add new locations, they go for Cloud City, the Death Star as opposed to anything from the prequels.

Bespin would be fantastic. I would have quite liked Geonosis in the game though.

After telling myself I wouldn't buy Star Wars, I caved earlier on after a bit pressure from a mate, it should keep me occupied until BF5 and for £27, it was a no brainer really. Played a few hours already and I'm enjoying, much fun to be had on it if you take it for what it is, which is a fun shooter with fantastic visual and sound effects.

If there was a Gungan slaying mode on Naboo, that would probably shift a few copies. Having said that, the sound is so impressive that you'd probably hear "MEESA GONNA DIE!" every 5 seconds, so fuck that.

Where did you get it so cheap? Recorded the latest episode of our podcast today and it was only when we were doing our 'what have you been up to' lately section that I realised the new Tomb Raider was out too, why do developers do this! Not getting any other games until I get board of fallout4 though. What a time stealer!

I took a quick trip to Mexico and bought it via Origin...

I really want TR but having Star Wars and Assassin's Creed to play, it'll be a while before I get round to playing it so may as well wait for it to get a bit cheaper.

Played a shitload of games over the weekend - had some mates over last night so gave the split screen Star Wars Battlefront a go.

Superb fun. Such a good laugh and the offline split screen modes are ridiculously addictive. And because it's not too 'intense' it's easy for a novice to pick up and not be completely overwhelmed by it. Obviously if you're a serious gamer, this may not be a good thing but if you just fancy a quick blast with mates, it makes it really good.

On Friday night I ventured online and managed to kill Darth Vader using Han Solo. Which was mega cool.

Also - check out Xbox live's Black Friday deals. I succumbed and got Forza Horizon 2 for £15. The most fun racing game I've played since Burnout 3: Takedown on the original Xbox. I'm not a massive fan of racing games (Mario Kart aside) but this is awesome fun and mega addictive. £15 really is a bargain as its massive.

Yeah I saw that but even at that price wouldn't play it enough to get the value out of it with my backlogue of stuff. I noticed that Killer Instinct Season 2 (or 1 &2) is cheap at the moment. Probably the best fighting game on the system, I know there isn't a great deal of competition but it's a great game, held back by the odd way they realised it.

The Xbox 360 is 10 years old! Cor - makes me feel old. I remember buying mine with Oblivion not long after it was released. It was easily my favourite games console as it had some utterly amazing games during the 9 years I had one. That's quite a decent innings for a games console!

Dunno which game I'd rate as my favourite, but there's the likes of Mass Effect, CoD 4, Red Dead Redemption, Skyrim, GTA V, The Batman: Arkham series, FIFA (10 onwards).

Some great games mentioned already, oddly for me I would say XCOM and Banjo Kazooie nuts and bolts are two of my favourites on the system, also Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas obviously.

I poured countless hours into failed I/I runs on XCOM, it's rather embarrassing.
