The Rugby Thread

Jeez, perhaps I should have put a smiley, but you really shouldn't take it so seriously.

Your ancestors were colonised, mine were killed down the pits. Patriotism is a load of shite, though I think Samuel Johnson may have said it better.

Because everyone enjoys beating the English, no matter what sport it is. Especially when it's on their doorstep.

I can go with that.

What I find small-minded is that whoever England are playing gets the support of the Welsh, Scots and Irish fans, even if it's Australia or France.

Fancied the boks to get the through the ABs, but after today they look unstoppable.

How is that archaic?

Do you disagree with what I said? Have you ever been in France/Germany/Argentina/Australia/Ireland etc when their national team is playing England?

Was in the forces for 9 years and have been to more countries around the world than you can imagine, I think you'll find Germany see there big rivals as Holland and don't go round with an ABE attitude neither do Argentina who's main rival is Brazil. Other than Argentina I've been to all of the above countries. I've also spent a lot of time in North America working alongside Canadians and Americans who certainly don't have bitterness towards English sporting sides.

So your comment "everyone" I do disagree with when its clearly not true.

France are not even trying now, NZ are practically walking over the line now.

Plenty of craic in the house tonight guys, my initial comment was in response to Leeds feigning surprise that people made a big deal of wales beating England.
England dominated world rugby for a long time, and as tournament hosts, many expected them to at least make the Final, so that's why so many people revelled in the fact they went out in the group stages, but my point was not made as a dig at English people, I was stating an honest fact that England are the team that everyone wants to beat, whatever sport it is. They have history with so many nations that it's unavoidable really.

Probably not, but there again he isn't a professional international rugby union player. Your point being?

Even to an international, when someone of that pace and physicality is charging at you it's difficult to stop them in their tracks...though a RL player would probably do it every time..

New Zealand are the only team (in rugby terms) that I can think of that don't have any rivalry with England, but they know that they've nothing to prove against us. Plenty of Football teams around the world don't see us as rivals either, (Germany for example) coz we're shit.

Really enjoyed that. In addition to a lot of phenomenal passing by the all blacks, I love seeing france being humiliated.

The way new zealand use the ball, pass, come out of the breakdown is phenomenal. A lesson to everyone watching.

I wasn't feigning surprise ffs. The opposite in fact.

Not necessarily, but it was a dumb retort.

I'll still keep supporting Ireland, which I have done since England got knocked out.

I hoped England would get through the group stages, at the expense of Australia though, not at the expense of Wales. I don't understand the mind-set of supporting other teams against Home nations, esp. in rugby union where we have the Lions.

Ah well. Such is life.

I'm the same...Both parents were from Dublin but I was born in Corby. I want all the home nations to do well and have no hatred for any of them...The vitriol from Scottish and Welsh fans bemuses me if I'm honest

This is what I find strange too. My old man was Scottish and he never had the mindset of Anybody But England and neither do my cousins, and Glasgow is a pretty anti-England place most of the time. It seems the small minded to have ABE attitude.
