The Rugby Thread

I'd agree with that, tonight's numpty must have a French shirt on underneath his official garb. Abysmal.

Agreed a lot are saying it's the biggest shock in RWC history I'm struggling to think of a bigger one in sporting history.
I think Japan have improved massively, we tend to remember them for the slaughtering's they got in the 90's.

Difficult to judge given the stage on which it occurred.

It's certainly up there with the all time great upsets; Appalachian State (my alma mater btw) vs Michigan 2005 (college gridiron, funnily enough the score was the same as the Japan v. SA match!), Vinci vs Williams 2015 (tennis), Gardner vs Karelin 2000 (wrestling), Douglas vs Tyson 1990 (boxing), Chaminade vs Virginia 1982 (college basketball), USA vs England 1950 (football), USA vs USSR 1980 (hockey).

Ah, great emotions re-watching clips of all these!

I suppose if you turn to the best judges of these things the bookies, Douglas was 20-1 or so to beat Tyson (1990! fuck I feel old now), you could have got between 70 & 100-1 yesterday for Japan to win.

Think the USA beating England 1-0 in 1950 is about on a par, newspapers back in England thought it was a miss print on the telegram and thought the actual score line was 10-1 to England.

I did not see the game, but does Japan's famous win mean that the minnows are getting a lot better, or did they just catch South Africa on an off day?

Bit of both Frank even if SA were having a bad day they should have enough to get over the line.

Is the world cup getting any coverage over there Al? Suppose it is bad timing with the NFL starting.

The biggest shocks in sport. It could be worth its own thread. Hereford beating Newcastle United in the FA Cup must be up there.

I'd add Cameroon 1 - 0 Argentina in Italia 90 to the list. Before the tournament Cameroon were 500 - 1 to lift the trophy and Argentina were, of course, the holders.

Just quick mentions of the Japan result, absolutely nothing otherwise.

Uruguay take the lead within 2 mins - Wales will win, but maybe not so much of a slaughter.

The smaller nations appear to have closed the gap a bit in the last 4 years.

Play stopped by TMO to point out dangerous play missed by ref..

Uruguay cannot cope with the set pieces - scrum pushed well back despite a fair weight advantage. Better in open play though 3rd Welsh try now & game starting to go with expected quality

Full back Liam Williams off with an injured leg.

I think the Uruguay scrum is well light of Wales' scrum, (897-839KG) but so was Japans' against SA. They just hooked the ball out very quickly which is sensible if you can't compete on weight.

HT Wales 28 - 9 Uruguay

Sure I saw an on screen stat that showed Uruguay as having the heavier pack though that's not enough if all the experience is on the other side.

Uruguay not even contesting Wales' lineouts.

Hadn't noticed before, but just watched one & they really don't.

Why not try, they won't change things often, but might get a lucky break. If they don't try then have no chance at all
