The Rugby Thread

Think I gave the cat heart failure when that try went in - she ran out of the house like she had been shot

Best game of rugby for excitement I've ever seen, what we've just seen will be replayed for years.
Fairness to Japan how many bigger nations would have bottled it and taken the draw?
They were 70/1 to win this game.

Tonga v Georgia might be a close affair. Not a high quality match but it might be interesting. South Africa will put 70 on Japan in their sleep. Ireland will have a simple day at the office as well.

That couldn't have worked out more differently. Just shows how tournaments like this can surprise (or shock) you.

Still in a bit of disbelief what I've just seen, rugby needs games like that to happen you don't want matches being formalities.
My eldest daughter just watched that second half absolutely gripped by the excitement, first game of rugby she's watched.

Don't think I've jumped up for a try as much as did just then

Me too

HOLY SHIT what a result, must be up there as one of the biggest shocks in any sport.

Has to be the biggest ever in rugby

Agreed a lot are saying it's the biggest shock in RWC history I'm struggling to think of a bigger one in sporting history.
I think Japan have improved massively, we tend to remember them for the slaughtering's they got in the 90's.

Definately, it is a massive shot in the arm for the tournament and the tier 2 nations, we don't want processions for a month until the quarter finals to essentially knock out 1 team.

I dont think Scotland or Somoa will be pleased about that result though, if Englands group is the group of "death" this might be the group of "fun".

What a game and what a result. I'm still buzzing.

Can't wait for Wales v Uruguay.

Still think SA will win the group, it's now wide open for 2nd spot. Thing is Japan have a real chance of getting to the QF now and will have real purpose when they play Scotland and Samoa instead of playing for respectability.
There discipline was excellent and they made very few handling errors.

Trouble for Japan is they have to play again on Wednesday, against Scotland. It depends how quickly they can recover after today, but it does seem a bit unfair, luck of the draw I suppose.

Eddie Jones and Steve Borthwick have done a fine job there. Hopefully they can keep it going after Jones leaves.

Unfortunately its not the luck of the draw, its the way the schedule is planned in favour of the big nations, the WR is controlled by the big 8 countries (the old five nations and tri-nations), out of 28 votes they have 2 each, they plan the fixtures to suit them, the vast majority of the time they will play at weekends to maximise tv audiences and revenue and so generally get a weeks rest.

The minnows schedules are built around them and they generally get screwed. So you have FIji playing England/Australia within 5 days and Japan have Springbok/Scots within 4 days. Samoa in 2011 played 4 games in 16 days.

Another try chalked off just as the conversion is about to be taken.

Fair enough as the French player had lost control of the ball, but they need to sort out this issue or it will become a problem

Didn't happen in the Japan match, the English TMO made good decisions and told his ref off a couple of times for frivolous nonsense too. It's a real luck of the draw in the officials it seems.

Agree, but we are only a few games in & 2 have had this issue already - not impressed with the standard of refs so far
