The Official FIFA World Cup 2022 Megathread

Just a shame England won’t qualify for the next round ay?

Wait…

Progressive passes? Average at best.
For England yes, but again that's tactical.

The lack of movement in the side is criminal.

It's amazing that when Southgate doesn't have much time to plan like we did against Iran we play well.

It's no coincidence we're fucking shit once he gets his 'sessions' going.

We've won 3 in 10 this calendar year. That's shite by any metric.

I'm not sure he actively tells him not to pass it forwards. Players have some level of autonomy even if the shape is admittedly quite safety first.

The exact same 11 players belted Iran 6 though so I don't think it's squarely on Southgate, even though I don't rate him.
I do safety first

Even for West Ham he's in the 66th percentile, not saying he's a poor footballer. He's an excellent central midfielder but he's not got enough to play as a single pivot at the top level.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Against the USA he should be more than good enough.

Sterling and Mount were the 2 who had poor games, but tbf to the former he was very good at the Euros and scored a good goal against Iran, he gets some slack. Foden should come in for the latter though, in a 3 man midfield there's no reason he couldn't play there, even if he normally plays wide of a front 3 for City

I think that’s a smidge unfair to Adams and Musah. McKennie does blow very hot and cold, I will grant you that.

For City he can and does play all over though.

How any manager worthy of the band could leave Mason Mount on after his first half performance is beyond me.

I agree with Gary Neville and Roy Keane tonight. Southgate got this horribly wrong.

To then come out and say he's happy when he said he was disappointed with the goals we conceded against Iran is appalling.

There's got to be a reason Pep doesn't trust him there. I know they've got unreal quality in that position but he never ever plays him in the midfield 3. I can't quite fathom it myself but I haven't really seen him ever do it.

Mount was awful. Looked physically weak and off the pace.

I think that’s a smidge unfair to Adams and Musah especially. McKennie does blow very hot and cold, I will grant you that.
This is like Man City v Leeds Alan.

Rice is more than good enough to play for City (or Liverpool) in that pivot but Musah and Adams aren't.

That's no disrespect just how it is.

Once the US get their act together when I'm long dust, they'll win it all consistently.

He does trust him there. But De Bruyne is better suited to that role right now, being one of the best players on the planet and all that.

Rice is good enough for City??

Yeah, agree to disagree lol 🍻
