The Manager Sacked/Hired Thread 2022/23

Villa had a Man Utd hate in the 90s as they never got to play any of us, Blues or Albion in the league for the entire decade and they couldn't give a toss about Coventry (who in turn, hate Villa).

United were of course nonplussed by this.

Sunderland hating Coventry (and they really do) is leftfield! All down to a season in the mid 70s when they were both fighting relegation, Cov just happened to get their kick off delayed on the final day and so were 15 minutes behind the Sunlun game. Once it was clear that a draw would do for them, they Austria-West Germany'd it.

Any Wolves fans under the age of 30 are unlikely to appreciate exactly why we hate Bolton.
Sorry to drudge this up but doubly so for American fans, with the likes of Stu Holden and Tim Ream having gotten big European chances at the club at a time when that was still a wild prospect for an American player.

I think we (soccer loving Americans) feel we owe clubs like Fulham and Bolton a sort of debt.

Everton can get fucked, though.

www.westbrom.com is their main site. If you want a laugh read their dingle watch thread. It used to be very busy when we were shit but the slow realisation that we were steaming past them never to be seen again is great.

Just had a look on there, my god it's depressing and they are really bitter about us. I suppose it's natural to be but jeez.

One thing I noticed and it's been a bugbear for years, why do they go on about us being in Staffordshire? Before the county lines were redrawn and the made up Sandwell was introduced West Bromwich was in Staffordshire.

Without going over old ground covered on here before it's a Black Country jibe, West Bromwich is in it Wolverhampton isn't is the accusation, hence Staffordshire used as a very weak insult

But the black country was in Staffordshire? West Brom was in Staffordshire until a made up county (I mean where is Sandwell exactly) moved them out

For a team who play their home games in Birmingham it's a really weird jibe, and one they really like to roll out.

Sandwell isn't a county it's a local authority. West Bromwich like Wolverhampton is in the West Midlands. Not all of the Black Country was in Staffordshire, Dudley as an example was Worcestershire

Because we are! (but then so are they...)

Despite popular belief, the counties were never redrawn in 1974, just the local authorities in existence at that time.

It's just the way that a club whose ground was half in Birmingham for many years has this thing about Wolverhampton not being in the Black Country, which to be fair the city centre isn't even if the likes of Bilston, Willenhall and other parts of the south and east of the city are.

Geography doesn't seem to be their strongest point, bless them.

I know that's my whole point, its just bizarre that they choose to use it as an insult (which I don't find insulting in any way!)
I suppose it's to try to claim that they're the only team in the Black Country, to try and distract from the fact that they're half Brummie.

Walsall are actually the only league team unequivocally with their ground in the Black Country, but as sycopantia says, it all depends on who you ask anyway, so shrug.

Seems like Bielsa is about to get sacked. I don’t quite have the dislike of Leeds that others do, so I’m quite sad for their fans. Similar parallels to the status Nuno had for us. Done a fantastic job there overall

You’re living up to your name. Anyone who grew up in the 70s has a dislike of Leeds etched into their DNA. Cynical, dirty football that won games but no friends outside of their own fans.

Oh for sure, I’m more than aware of the history. I’ve read every Clough book there is to read to understand why

Fantastic is overstretching it. Chris Wilder did a much better job and he’s (Bielsa) probably worse than Dean Smith.

(Edited for clarity)

Wilder is excellent. Much better than Smith imo

bielsa is a wonderful but very flawed coach. Took a crap Leeds team from mid table championship to top half last season. I can understand why he’s so revered by fans of teams he manages

I grew up as a Leeds fan. A proper northern team. Their football was certainly no worse than Chelsea.

Wilder is for sure. Just using them as reference points. Bielsa is held on some pedestal, but his achievements are no better (arguably worse) than Dean Smiths.

Chelsea were far less successful so attracted less glory hunters so probably avoided so much dislike but I remember being rivals in the Second Division in the 70s and still dislike Chelsea as much as Leeds.

Really?

Literally got a stadium named after him in Argentina!

he’s a bit of a cult hero. I can see why. His teams play fantastic football often transforming previously thought of as limited footballers.

as I said he’s very flawed in many ways but I don’t get the whole football men people being all “yeah but what has he achieved”. He’s achieved plenty and his teams are a joy to watch
