It's not the same scenario though. Last season it was a 'good enough' group with a sprinkling of PL quality, who needed direction, discipline and their potential realising a little more.
This group lacks anything like that foundation of quality, so your ceiling is already way too low to make a meaningful difference. Throw into that mix a manager without PL chops and us already being miles beind points-wise too.
Only semi-realistic hope is a couple of Agbadou*-level impact signings in January, combined with us not being mathematically totally adrift, and multiple other teams falling off a cliff.
Nothing's done and dusted...but if someone's hanging onto that, against all evidence and likelihood, then they're either the world's biggest optimist, delusional or just swimming against the tide to stand out and be different
