The Football News Thread 2017/18 - everything not Wolves

The FA should be ashamed of themselves.

Is this a new rule by the FA?

Back in the 90's in the Match Day Programme, Wolves used to run a cartoon review of previous games and anytime Swindon Town were mentioned we called them Swindle Town. Can't remember us being bollocked or fined for that.

My very sketchy knowledge of Moneyball is that it's using the power of player stats over more conventional analysis eg the more you make first base, the more likely you are to win, so fill your side with guys with high hit percentages rather than HR's. So what is the footballing equivalent of that? If it's set pieces than the likes of Allardyce and Pulis have been playing that percentage game for years.

The metrics don't really work in football, at least as far as I can see. That approach works in a game of set pieces, football has too much of a flow for it to make any sense. You can't just decide to attack their left back around the 67th minute because that's when he tends to make a mistake.

Arsenal tried using that kind of system for their scouting a year or two ago, it landed them with Xhaka, Lucas Perez and Gabriel. Fair to say that didn't go too well. Think they've binned it now.

Not to say you can't make use of the data but you can't make it the central core of your entire approach.

They bollocked us for putting up a laughing clown (not Mo Camara) on the videowalls when the opposition missed a chance. The killjoy blazers.

We had a fair few run ins with the FA for the shit we pulled back in those days. We even got fined for playing the Rocky theme when Wolfie appeared at Molineux after his dust up with the Pigs at Bristol City

"Under new EFL regulations 3.4 and 3.5 all clubs are required to behave towards one another with the ‘utmost good faith’ and not to ‘unfairly criticise, disparage, belittle or discredit’ any other club."

I'm guessing there is also a clause added just for Steve Bruce "3.5a Must talk about Wolves at every opportunity even when they are not relevent to your situation"

Didn't they give us a bollocking for the magic sponge animation too?

I'm with Frank here. Seems petty on Wimbledon's part. They have every right to hate MK but the best way to get back at them is on the pitch.

They should appeal that, any criticism or belittlement of MK is very fair.

I think Wimbledon were quite restrained tbh, what happened to them and their club and what the FA allowed to happen was utterly shameful.

Speaking of Wimbledon and MK, do MK have any actual supporters? Like, if the average British football fan saw somebody wearing MK gear, what would the judgement be?

Wanker

The slightly more serious answer is they have done a lot of work in MK to appeal to a younger supporter base, with a relative degree of success. As an overspill new town although it didn't have a league team prior to them rocking up the locals tended to support the clubs from London that their relocated family came from, so it wasn't the hotbed of possibility that Winkleman thought it would be. Even to the young kids in the community they target and give tickets to, they are still a second club behind one from the PL.

Yeah there is an MK Dons fan who was on my course, from that area, but guess what - total, total wanker. Of the highest order.

Tyler Blackett, Reece Burke, Paddy McNair, Hector Bellerin, Emre Can, Jack Grealish, Jordon Ibe and Lazar Markovic

Christ :icon_lol:

Anyone who has ever watched Tyler Blackett for ten minutes can tell you exactly what he is, he's EEL without the goalscoring ability at absolute best. To be fair a couple of them in Can and Grealish (and possibly even Bellerin now) are cases of stunted development, they did look good once. Ibe and Markovic have always been flaky. Burke will make a career in the Championship somewhere, McNair is dross, obviously too slow in body and mind.

From the outside looking in we expect Premier league clubs with over a hundred million a year turnover to be better run than the Dog and Duck.
Its usually not the case.
