The Football News Thread 2017/18 - everything not Wolves

That seems to be conflating entirely different issues to me :icon_lol:

Plus you have the situation whereby Scandinavian, Russian, Turkish and Swiss clubs operate with different transfer windows to the rest of mainland Europe.

Would be fascinating to see what might happen if players could leave and get new jobs at other clubs just like in any other field, though.

After the initial shake-up I bet you'd still get clubs developing players, but the big change would be much lower transfer fees alongside much, much higher wages to entice players to stay (including much larger youth contracts). Even if you imposed a salary cap it'd probably be chaos.

You're already seeing a situation whereby smaller clubs are downgrading or binning off Academies because EPPP (disgraceful legislation) means they get fuck all if some big club decides they want their best players before they've signed pro forms. Why should they do all the legwork for no reward? You'd get an extension of that at first team level. It'd be shit.

Yeah, my suspicion is it would accelerate inequality between the tops of the top leagues and the bottoms of those leagues, and even more so below that.

Transfer window opens June 1st
Transfer window closes Aug 1st

Seems pretty damn simple to me. Players get a couple of weeks before it opens. Then it closes before any of the major leagues start up again. Two months is plenty of time to sign players.

Would World Cups, European Championships, Olympic Games and Confederation Cups cause a problem?

Well yeah. Same as they do now anyway.

Oh my god - Twitter overreactions and other cyber-meltdowns condensed into just 2 months?! Terrible idea.

Well they're condensed into one day at the moment...

We already have all that in half the time for the January window.

That column is spot on. Merson is the worst football pundit I've ever known. Soccer Saturday has become a joke, Jeff is very knowledgeable, and is a pretty good presenter and I think Le Tiss knows what he is on about, but Merson, Nicholas and Thompson are awful, as is Kamara.

It's really weird at Sky, they have Neville and Carragher who I think are excellent at what they do, yet they champion idiots like Kamara and Merson purely for them being clowns.

Merson does seem to delight in self-ridicule. He can get away with it on Soccer Saturday which I still find very entertaining but it's pointless listening to him before/after games as his expert advice is just non existent. I don't mind the entertainment values they hold on that show though - it's always been like that and I still think it works.

Much rather that than the absolute piffle cunts like Hoddle come out with during live matches. The guy is a fraud.

Nothing wrong with soccer Saturday. Kamara is there for novelty value, he's not really asked to offer any insight on the game. Merson is a bit of a Buffoon but it's funny, and when he just says things as it is, not a lot wrong with that. I find Thompson and Le Tiss ok, I don't always agree with what Nicholas says but that's football.

Talking of pundits, does anyone else think Chris Sutton is incredibly fake? It's like he's been deliberately put there to be argumentative and contrary. I doubt he actually believes half the stuff he argues about.

I bet it's revoked after one window if other leagues don't follow suit.

I doubt the other leagues will.

Leaves an opportunity for the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid to come in for Premier League players, and if they get them gives the Prem teams no time to sign replacements.

Easily sorted. Tell Coutinho et al. You have until Thursday to get Barca to pay what we want, if they don't, you won't be going.

Or if they aren't selling full stop then it's easy to reject the bids. Player isn't going to be any more or any less unsettled than happens in the current system

Not really as now your players will still be unsettled for the whole of August and you can't buy replacements for them at all. Seems a daft move to me and the window should've been closed to sales as well as buying.
