The Football News Thread 2017/18 - everything not Wolves

Motson should have retired decades ago - he's a dreadful commentator. Never liked him - always in the shadow of Barry Davies in BBC terms. Tyldesley will never retire. We're stuck with him. Imagine his poor wife with him roaming around the house with nothing to do, quoting endless diatribe and pointless trivia. And still trying to shoehorn in his 'Wolstenholme Moment'. Fucking idiot. He'll never better 'Podolski - BANG!'. My son comes out with better lines when he's playing FIFA.

And as for people thinking Birmingham is better than Manchester - have a fucking word. It's like saying Joe Mason is better than Lionel Messi.

I thought Ayr was nice! My brother lived there for a few years. The Wetherspoons in Ayr is in an old church, and its really nice.
That Wetherspoons (The West Kirk) had the worst kept beer I've had the misfortune to be offered. My first selection was returned as was my second. The guy at the bar next to me posed "What do you expect for £2"?

The town centre is abandoned. The only redemption it has is it's micro-brewery the Ayr Brewing Co.

The BBC have a minimum of 3 articles a day on this man. The BBC naval gazing has gone right past cringe at the moment with Brucie and now Motson.

Never understood the hype over Motty can think of numerous better commentators over time in various sports. As football goes he's not in the same league as Barry Davies or Brian Moore was.
Even now I'd say his style is behind many upcoming commentators.

I found him borderline tolerable in the 90s though not a patch on Davies.

He's been an embarrassment for well over a decade. The last ever FA Cup final he did was in 2008, Portsmouth vs Cardiff. When the BBC show Kanu's goal from that game they don't play any commentary over it, because Motson was screeching that it had been disallowed for offside for about 30 seconds.

Whenever there's a goalmouth scramble now he just does some kind of weird Henry's Cat noise.

I remember when Barry Davies came back for a one off for MOTD's 50th anniversary - at Selhurst Park I think it was. He's not been behind the mic in years for football, yet he was leagues ahead of anyone else on the show.

Motson has become a self parody these days. Well, for the past 15-20 years TBH. He's never reached Tyldesley level of utter cretinage but he still spoils the footage.

Yeah, Palace vs West Ham. He was still very good indeed.

The Ayrshire coast is lovely, but Ayr itself is a dreadful place.

This. Kilmarnock and Ayr are absolute dives but the rest is nice. Troon, Largs, etc are really nice and the golf is awesome in that part of Scotland if you're into that.

Chalk up another one for Glasgow over Edinburgh as well. Glasgow is awesome, cant get along with Edinburgh at all.

I hate everything about the transfer windows. It was so much better when you could sign players all season up until March 31.

I've never quite understood the purpose. It's a system set up to benefit no-one.

I was thinking of the old transfer 'window' yesterday when my daughter asked about it and I just can't imagine players moving all through the season now, it would be utter bedlam. I think the window should open as soon as the season has finished and shut just before it begins.

Wasn't it something the European Commission insisted on rather than UEFA or FIFA? Maybe we can 'take back control' of our transfer windows soon...

It's been on a rapid decline ever since that reporter had a purple dildo shoved in his ear. Never been the same since. I don't bother watching it anymore.

The problem with that is that seasons start at all manner of different times all over Europe. So you'd still have situations like Coutinho, the English season has kicked off, Barcelona want him, La Liga doesn't start for another three weeks, they can sign players and will still tap him up.

The current situation is worse IMO. Look at Griffiths here - Celtic expressed their interest in early December and then we basically had a diminished version of our own top scorer for six weeks because he obviously wanted to go. Rather than wasting all that time, we could have sold him right away and brought a replacement in.

I don't think so, could be wrong but don't see why the EC/EU would make that intervention. If anything it's against their rules. Restraint of trade and all that.

Just for you Langers

It was something I read on the Premier League website:

Windows were introduced as part of a compromise agreement with the European Commission about how the whole transfer system worked and how it could best preserve contractual stability for both the player and the club while allowing movement at prescribed times during the year – the summer and winter transfer windows in effect.

The alternative was to bring football in line with most other industries where contracts were not enforceable or liable for appropriate compensation, i.e. notice periods being served and players moving at will. The football authorities across Europe felt this would fatally undermine the footballing economy and remove the incentive for clubs to invest in developing players.
