You can see why he would've wanted to do something to help Torres regain some confidence but it's seems incredible that's the best idea he had considering his years of experience, it's the sort of nonsense that happens at 'training' for a Sunday league team when half the team don't show up, just people randomly lumping stuff into the box and taking pot shots at a poor helpless keeper, eventually a couple will decide to 'defend' out of little more than boredom but there's nothing gained by anyone.

Seems an odd one as Hodgson is renowned for putting his teams through endless defensive drills to promote organisation. Having an 8 vs 2 situation doesn't fit that. Maybe he just lost the plot there towards the end, managers do weird things when they're getting pelters every week and not getting results.

I could see the value of Brodge practicing 8 vs 2 being as he doesn't understand what a defensive midfielder is so his centre halves are constantly ludicrously over-exposed.

However, isn't it going to be absolute chaos? Say a ref does enforce it on the first weekend... off goes some high profile player, resulting in the rest of the team crowding around the ref for a petulant rant too. What next? How many does he send off? If he ends up dishing out red cards to three or four, the ref himself will be accused of ruining a game of football. I'm not sure a stadium full of fans is going to be pleased if, say, Arsenal find themselves playing 7 v 11 half an hour into their opening game.

It'll increase drama and spectacle in one way until the majority of players get the message, but for the first few weeks, it could be a shambles. Fascinated to see how it'll turn out!

Seems a decent signing to me, ending up playing Afellay deep a lot last season to have some quality on the ball there so Allen should be a decent replacement there.
