It's a very recent thing. We played Sweden on 10th November 2001 - no poppies on the shirts.
FIFA are hamfisted buffoons, but the degree of mawkishness surrounding the subject every year is just as irritating.
About 5 or 6 years ago wasn't and not every club did it when it started. I think Man Utd refused for a few years. Also remember one year Albion made their players change into normal shirts in the 2nd half of a game as they shorts are auctioned off after the game and they couldn't trust the players not to swap or throw the shirts into the crowd at full time.
I presume Preston did theirs last week as that was the nearest home game to the 11th. For as long as I can remember teams have done it that way, long before the Poppies on the shirts stuff.
