I see a few of us more mature gentlemen (wrinklies) have Hibbitt and Bailey in our top two, but opinions are divided as to who was the best.
They were two completely different players. Hibbitt tended to play just behind the Doog and Richards and often made runs forward into space created by King John as he pulled defenders out of position. His goal scoring record is testimony to his attacking prowess.
Bailey was the rock in midfield. With players like Jimmy Mac, Hibbitt, Sunderland and Waggy in the team, someone had to play the anchor role, and he did superbly. He broke up attacks and played the ball on to the more naturally gifted players, and he had a massive throw in that often reached the far post.

Comparing apples with oranges Frank - they were both important in their own way
For me though Bailey was the heart of the team & drove them forward. Not the most skillful footballer in that team, but without him they lacked the driving force. As Captain he ran the team
To be honest I have no problem with people who saw him putting Bailey down as #1. If you're old enough to remember him and that's what you think, seems perfectly fine to me. Big player, captain in what was clearly a decent team...ok. And it's not like we've had that much to compete in that area since.
It's when he was getting named in the UK/Ire XI that it was quite clearly silly. Mike Bailey, he of two England caps (picked up before he joined Wolves), he is one of the best six central midfielders that have come out of the British Isles in the last 47 years? It's that kind of stuff which makes people of my age think that the 70s crowd might slightly, slightly look back on that era with a bit too much wistfulness.
