The Definitive TWF Wolves XI Thread (1970 - present)

Think 1970- was about right, you probably cover the majority of people on this forum, and while I accept it probably doesn't make much sense to have such a wide span, I think its made it a lot of fun........although it did make me puff my cheeks out yesterday when someone posted they hadn't seen Bully or Keane play........god I'm old

To be honest I have no problem with people who saw him putting Bailey down as #1. If you're old enough to remember him and that's what you think, seems perfectly fine to me. Big player, captain in what was clearly a decent team...ok. And it's not like we've had that much to compete in that area since.

It's when he was getting named in the UK/Ire XI that it was quite clearly silly. Mike Bailey, he of two England caps (picked up before he joined Wolves), he is one of the best six central midfielders that have come out of the British Isles in the last 47 years? It's that kind of stuff which makes people of my age think that the 70s crowd might slightly, slightly look back on that era with a bit too much wistfulness.

I can only speak for myself. Bailey wasn't one of the best midfielders to come out of the British Isles, but in the early seventies he was an integral part of the Wolves team. A team packed with flair players needed the steadying hand of Bailey, and he fitted into that role superbly.

Been over this, if I restricted it to say, 1990 onwards, I'd have endless whining about not being able to pick certain players. Can't win either way so may as well give everyone a chance to name who they want (with apologies to the <5 people who remember the Cullis teams).

No problems whatsoever with your timespan. It has been very interesting.

Though I demand a recount in the centre halves poll....!!

I do rib people about it all but equally I wish I'd seen the 70s team first hand. I've never seen anywhere near a decent top flight Wolves team, let alone one capable of top six finishes. There was the very, very odd flash in 2010/11 under Mick that we might push on (if we could stop losing to absolute filth) but other than that...not in the same universe. And I'm about to enter my 30th season of attendance.

I hope it happens before I pop off.

74 League Cup final is a good shout - nothing on the box tonight so might watch that again

No one really gave us a prayer, but then............

Gary Pierce on his birthday! Fucking awesome display. Challenge ..... Name a better display by a keeper in a wembley final since 1970? Beasant for Wimbledon? Maybe. Chris Woods forest v Liverpool? Maybe. But that's it. Top three at least.

Stephane Henchoz, 2001

Seriously hoiw good was GP that day? Woods, a teenage understudy was awesome against Liverpool so its a first place tie for me. I have never seen better in a final than those two. Jim Montgomery in 73 with the wonder double save in third Beasanr v Liverpool in fourth. Nothing tops them.

Best display ever in a final? Bert Trautmann with a broken neck but that's 60 years ago. Frank remembers it!

Just watched it - was there, but don't remember all of it (well it was half a lifetime ago - for me anyway)

So much under pressure early on with big Frank imperious & refusing to allow anyone past him.

Considering that I knew the result before I watched that still not sure how we managed to win it.

Me too, thought we were the better team 1st half, under the cosh most of the 2nd. Entertaining game but was surprised that the big stars of both teams had fairly ordinary games.....Bailey motm by a mile
