The Definitive TWF Wolves XI Thread (1970 - present)

Best display ever in a final? Bert Trautmann with a broken neck but that's 60 years ago. Frank remembers it!

I do 9 years old at the time actually went to the 1960 FA Cup final.

My first game was at the final game Billy Wright ever played a pre-season game Whites v Reds immediately before thae start of the 59-60 season I think although I had been to a few reserve games before then.

Milijas - I thought I'd be the only one to put him in due to him being criminally underused as he didn't really suit Mick. Surprised he has so many votes!

Milijas was a quality footballer but never really did it consistently for us. Wonderful left foot on him but was criminally slow and Mick didn't trust him. A shame because the times that he did perform for us the whole team played better I felt. In the 2010/11 season we played some great football and he was at the heart of it.

His best run of form was ended by the shitty red card he got at Arsenal.

I see a few of us more mature gentlemen (wrinklies) have Hibbitt and Bailey in our top two, but opinions are divided as to who was the best.

They were two completely different players. Hibbitt tended to play just behind the Doog and Richards and often made runs forward into space created by King John as he pulled defenders out of position. His goal scoring record is testimony to his attacking prowess.

Bailey was the rock in midfield. With players like Jimmy Mac, Hibbitt, Sunderland and Waggy in the team, someone had to play the anchor role, and he did superbly. He broke up attacks and played the ball on to the more naturally gifted players, and he had a massive throw in that often reached the far post.

Spot on Frank.

I do rib people about it all but equally I wish I'd seen the 70s team first hand. I've never seen anywhere near a decent top flight Wolves team, let alone one capable of top six finishes. There was the very, very odd flash in 2010/11 under Mick that we might push on (if we could stop losing to absolute filth) but other than that...not in the same universe. And I'm about to enter my 30th season of attendance.

I hope it happens before I pop off.

I feel for you . . . At least the grey brigade have actually seen a Wolves team COMPETE in the top tier (for well over a decade), win trophies, reach a major European Final and be a very good side (but not great). The other thing that many of us hold the 70s team in great regards is that they were were great entertainers.

Some good men (and Henri Camara) missing out there. Dean Sturridge, Kevin Doyle (for his first year), Don Goodman, David Kelly, George Ndah, Benik Afobe, Nathan Blake and Nouha Dicko all came close.

Really wanted to drop Akinbiyi in there, as the one season he had with us was pretty good.

Going over the strikers we've had over the last 25 years or so I've been following Wolves, we have had quite a few decent ones to go with the dross we have also had.

Keane is so low due to the small amount of time he actually played for Wolves although he was a real talent. However, all the other teams he supported as a child got the best years of him...

Bully not in the top 2 simply because his goals weren't in the top tier (yes he played and scored for England but we're making a call on what the players did when they pulled on the Old Gold shirt).

Agree with darlowolf64 re Keene but he still didn't make my top 6.

Hence why I favour the guys who scored regularly in the top tier - against the best defenses and keepers - which is why I've given a nod to Fletcher.

At the time I really rated Hughie Curran - scored a lot of goals in the 1st division in the early 70s for Wolves.

But my top 2 have to Richards and Dougan. For 3 years - 71 to 73 - they were arguably the best 2 strikers as a partnership in the country, and that's including scoring goals (all in the top flight) !

Bully should automatically be everyone's number one, regardless of quantities of individual posters' grey hairs. #FACKT
