The Definitive TWF Wolves XI Thread (1970 - present)

Glad peeps have clarified the hibbitt issue.

My picks:
hibbitt (has to be in for me - please twf, save my childhood!)
rae
cameron
downing
henry
jones

First season in the PL, when we were missing SEB, Henry stood out a mile as consistently stepping up to the plate. He was a really good captain, as well as playing superbly. Criminally under-rated.

Cameron
Osborn
Jones

I see a few of us more mature gentlemen (wrinklies) have Hibbitt and Bailey in our top two, but opinions are divided as to who was the best.

They were two completely different players. Hibbitt tended to play just behind the Doog and Richards and often made runs forward into space created by King John as he pulled defenders out of position. His goal scoring record is testimony to his attacking prowess.

Bailey was the rock in midfield. With players like Jimmy Mac, Hibbitt, Sunderland and Waggy in the team, someone had to play the anchor role, and he did superbly. He broke up attacks and played the ball on to the more naturally gifted players, and he had a massive throw in that often reached the far post.

Comparing apples with oranges Frank - they were both important in their own way

For me though Bailey was the heart of the team & drove them forward. Not the most skillful footballer in that team, but without him they lacked the driving force. As Captain he ran the team

I was reading 'Clough by Taylor' and two of the players he wished he was able to sign were Richards and Bailey. Saw Bailey as a fantastic captain.

To be honest I have no problem with people who saw him putting Bailey down as #1. If you're old enough to remember him and that's what you think, seems perfectly fine to me. Big player, captain in what was clearly a decent team...ok. And it's not like we've had that much to compete in that area since.

It's when he was getting named in the UK/Ire XI that it was quite clearly silly. Mike Bailey, he of two England caps (picked up before he joined Wolves), he is one of the best six central midfielders that have come out of the British Isles in the last 47 years? It's that kind of stuff which makes people of my age think that the 70s crowd might slightly, slightly look back on that era with a bit too much wistfulness.

He could also drive forward with the ball when it won it deep in our half and was very hard to stop!

That puts it perfectly in my opinion.

Agree shouldn't be being named in the UK/Ire team - he was good, but not that good

For Wolves though, that's a different story

I see what you say about the lack of England caps for the 70's superstars, but there was so much more competition then and I don't think the squads were as big, plus you were only allowed I sub.....I think. Bailey wouldn't have got in as he would have been vying for Colin Bells spot I think......never gunna happen. Always wondered why England did so badly back then.....maybe we were as guilty then as now in overrating our players

I haven't a clue what the UK/Ire stuff is. I assume it was some thread on here? I put forward the players that I think are/were the best in a particular position. TBF the time spam chosen for the TWF team is ridiculous given the site demograph.

Been over this, if I restricted it to say, 1990 onwards, I'd have endless whining about not being able to pick certain players. Can't win either way so may as well give everyone a chance to name who they want (with apologies to the <5 people who remember the Cullis teams).
