Summer 2020 Transfer Window (Extended Version)

Jonny is much better at pressing and defending then he is going forward and contributing to our goals and assists. Every time he gets the ball in an attacking scenario I don't expect much to happen - he generally stops and plays the ball backwards or the attack fizzles out. On the other side, you feel Doc will make something happen when he's going forward but as Deano correctly says, we concede more goals on that side because he isn't fantastic at defending.

I guess what it boils down to is what you want from those areas. Difficult to get a player that offers what Doc does going forward but also has the ability to press and defend as well as Jonny without spending a silly amount of money or getting very lucky.

I think the trick Nuno and co need to pull next season, whether this is through personnel or tactical tweak, is to give us a little more attacking threat without sacrificing too much of our defensive solidity

It's not Doherty's defending that I have an issue with (although it is still occasionally shite), it's his sloppiness in possession. It really stood out to me post lockdown just how often he gifts the ball away under no pressure.

I think to upgrade him we'd have to find a seriously good player though.

I’m interested to see whether the teams in Europe struggle by having the games squeezed into a shorter space of time, could really affect some of them.

By the same token, way too many crosses still come in from Doherty's side and he still makes defensive errors so it depends what you like. Both wing backs are good but both have their flaws.

I think the result is also reflected, to a degree, in the attacking output from both flanks

Adama is Adama so it's hard to judge but Jota has been poor this season - part of me thinks that is because he gets isolated as Jonny isn't really an option for him to pass to until the attack is more 'mature'

If you look at our two seasons in the Premier League under Nuno though, we've been very consistent and gradually improved during the course of each season. Even with a relatively poor transfer window season last summer, we still grew as a team. I think we can improve by a bigger margin this season points wise personally too

No I agree, just playing devils advocate.

But after not really improving the 1st XI in the last two windows but still progressing, one or two top players will make a massive difference. Particularly if we keep everyone we want.

His major problem for me, is he is too slow getting back into a defensive position.

Add that to his sloppiness in giving the ball away and we have a major problem that other teams take advantage of.

I also feel he has a communication problem with Traore/Neto/Podence esp. over give-and-go's and covering each other.

He is inconsistent though and can be excellent on his day. Unfortunately, for me, the bad days outweigh the good days and I feel he needs replacing.

Worth remembering that last summer we spent 40 odd million just to stand still by making Raul and Dendoncker permanent. Honestly I think if we signed a central midfielder with a genuine goal threat we would have a great chance of top 6. Our defence is generally very good, the main problem is a lack of goals imo.

Incidentally, since Rugani's name comes up now and again, this might be of interest

Juventus this season when he plays - 2.09 goals conceded/game
Juvetntus this season without him - 0.89 goals conceded/game

He started 4 of their 7 losses in the league this year

Yikes.

Now, evidently, stats alone do not tell the whole story. And players can always reclaim their careers with a move and improve under different management/in a different system (hello Mr Bennett). However the above would probably point to why Juve apparently do not want him anymore.

Possible Return to Sender situation

Norwich said to have enquired about Wolves man Ryan Bennett. Makes a lot of sense. Made no secret of his desire to move back down there. He told the Express & Star in December: "It’s a town my family are going to grow up in and I’m going to move back to eventually."

He's only played ten games this season to be fair (according to wikipedia anyway)

Got to admire your ability to find these on Twitter! You must have to trawl through some right shit just to get to these.

I presume this is the (k)nob

Watford have accepted a £45 million deal for Ismaïla Sarr from Wolves, seems Doucoure is also Wolves bound, more to follow. #WWFC #WFC

Just got my search set to #wwfc - never takes long...

Still must have to see a ton of shite though. 5 mins searching for Wolves stuff can melt my brain and make me give up on life

I like Doucoure but not sure what he would offer Wolves. He wouldn't be an upgrade on Dendocker as the other midfielder we use and isn't creative or different enough to warrant having as a different option. For me I feel like we now need the Prem version of Alfred N'Diaye, I appreciate he wasn't much of a goal threat but feel like he used to push on to the box much more than anyone we currently have. Dendocker has been doing a better job of that recently, however I still think it would be good to have a more advanced/clinical threat and then have the option of playing one of the Deep CMs, with Dendocker and the more specialist/attack minded player.

Badiashille seemingly off to join Tapsoba at Leverkusen.

I like Sarr based on what I've seen of him. Strikes me as a player who could also play through the middle with some of Nuno's magic dust sprinkled on him...
