Summer 2020 Transfer Window (Extended Version)

I'll explain it one last time

In her phrasing she put 'the club wanted to upgrade' first.

The inference (imo) being that it was initially the club's idea. Which kind of fits her perspective, and others, that this is 'all part of the plan'.

That's directly contradicted by the Shi statement, where he says all this was not in the clubs plans until the offer came in. He literally says this

So really, 'Doc wanted to go' should come before 'the club wanted to upgrade'. Language and detail is important.

Is that OK?

Her phrasing is supposition but, given we now have no first team RWB I think we can all safely say we're looking at buying one. Presumably we were looking at someone to take the first team place and use Doherty as a squad member, therefore they weren't planning to sell him. After we'd identified our target/s and were someway down the line to making one happen an offer came in for Doherty and the club decided to take the money instead of having Doherty sitting on the bench.

That fits Jeff's statement and Sam's post, again all supposition I'll admit but it's pretty easy enough to understand. it should be anyway as I've typed it out a simply as I can as language and detail are important.

Is that OK?

Agreed. We have not done well here.

Yep, and given how well we did getting the sums we did for Cav and Costa it seems all the more odd.

All the press stories saying we need to sell to raise funds to buys i met with derision and thought "what a load of bollocks" but when we do a deal like this you have to wonder if there is some truth to it.

I think it says a lot that the move was sanctioned after heavily rumoured AMN interest and a bid. For all we know, Nuno may have sat down with Doherty and said he had a fight on his hands this season for a place as we were looking at bolstering that area, Doc didn't fancy it and has moved to a club where he will be a guaranteed starter. We get £15m rather than an unhappy bench warmer.

Again, I'm just speculating but I can't see a world where he forced us.

Pretty embarrassingly patronising rubbish from both of you.

Wolvensam, I've been on Wolves forums for 25 years so I don't need your pat on the head, thanks

Boozad, you've had a bee in your bonnet with me for days and I'm not sure what your problem is, but if you really are a moderator, and your tag isn't just someone's idea of a joke, you should probably move on from the tit for tat nonsense before the rest of the forum gets bored to death, or just block me

Sounds perfectly plausible. I guess the coming days will give us more of an idea. Either way there’s no way we’d be letting him go without having a direct replacement in mind, whether that’s someone coming in or someone already here.

The fee is an absolute bollocks. Whether the 'easy upgrade' settles immediately and Burr is adequate back up or not, the fee is an absolute bollocks. Absolute. Bollocks.

Have you got an agreement with the club for a % of the sale, Del? It’s as though you’ve personally missed out on a payday.

The bid is what the club accepted and so the fee is what we could get for him and decided to cash in... that’s about it

I'm just not going to judge the club on last summer - Vallejo and Cutrone were rubbish but nobody predicted that either would not settle. Prior to that our windows have always been pretty positive.

We got good fees for Cutrone, Costa and Cavaleiro so there is some thinking here. I think I will wait to see how the next few weeks pan out... we aren't going to rush and panic buy to find a replacement and nor should we.

I find that an odd argument.

What is wrong with thinking we didn't get a good price for Doherty?

It’s the way he’s mentioned it every day* and is getting angrier the more he posts about the fee... it’s just odd that he’s taking it so personally

*he may not have posted about the fee every day but it has seemed like he’s posted a lot about it.
Also I do know Del and hope he takes my post in the jokie, not a personal attack, way that I meant it in

Listening to his Spurs interview, I think Doc has equally pushed for the move. We move on, I dont think Spurs are getting the player they think they are though

Alternatively, player says nice things about his new club.

Player interviews are just PR exercises. Just like when he was saying he wanted to be here for another 5 years. I'm sure he did as it would help secure his financial future, just like this move will.

Just to play devil's advocate, what would we think if we had just bought Doc for the sum bandied about ? Bearing in mind that we know his limitations (and Spurs possibly don't).
Personally I think its a good deal whether or not we have someone in mind to come in. Is Sanderson not a good prospect ?

Sanderson isn't an RWB he's a CB who can play a defensive version of a right back in a 4

Yeah that is not a solution for us. If we start the season with him or Traore there it’s not good

You'd have people questioning "why are they selling us a first team player for a relatively low fee"...

Ah so you do acknowledge it's a low fee. That's a relief! :)

On the face of it, it is. Although talk of "market value" is still wide of the mark, football doesn't work like that.

As I keep saying though, improving our team and squad is more important to me than spending weeks messing around over an extra £4-5m that we may or may not end up getting.
