Shrewsbury 2 - 2 Wolves: The Verdict

How did Giles fare overall?

Quiet game really. Wasn't faced with any great threat down his side (Shrews created basically nothing apart from the goals) but because we never quite got going as a team, he didn't get much opportunity to show what he could do going forward. Plus we did what we tend to do a lot when Doc is playing and knock everything down his side (he was very good today).

Did put a cross in for Raul which he should have done better with.

My issue as I said to Tredman is the depth of squad and Nuno's preferences. At the moment if we were to change 11with zero injuries it would be something like:

-----------------------Ruddy-------
---------John------Kilman------Saiss----
-----Buur------MGW------Watt-----Vinagre
--------Traore------Cavaleiro------Costa

I suppose we could keep the likes of Batth and Hause around, but is that really in anyone's interest?

Burnley dumped it in the end anyway.

If we get in it'd be a wonderful adventure, I just think we are a long way off being cut out for it.

That eleven is at best, a championship team. Proving your point

That interplay with Costa was great and Raul really should have scored

Yes if we got in it we would need a handful more players. But we ain’t anywhere near it in January! I don’t think “bulking the squad out” on dross until May (who probably won’t be any better than the underperforming players we have already) is worth it. Maybe a full back, but forward, not for me

Sorry you've misunderstood, I wasn't advocating anybody now or even bulking the squad out in the Summer. I was pointing out that doing so is counter productive to what Nuno likes to work with.

Apologies, maybe it wasn’t you, but someone used today as an example of why we need another striker. I think i quoted them earlier up and said my thoughts so won’t repeat them.

Edit - it was treadmans post I was responding to

We either need to play Traore on the right or not play him at all.

We'd have won this easily if we had played a proper 3-4-3.

This nonsense of pretending we don't need more players and are good enough needs to stop. We have one player able to play in the middle. It's nonsense. Same goes for our lack of cover at the back. It's pure arrogance.

I think eventually we do, we seem pretty set on two up front (didn't even change it today despite not starting with a striker) and we'll need some actual back up/competition to Raul and Jota, not wide options who can't perform that task. But you aren't getting anyone now. If Tammy Abraham was the best we could do this month (and I'm not bothered that we didn't get him) then I'd rather go without.

People are seriously talking about Charlie Austin as an option on Twitter, I'm not sure they've ever watched him and/or Wolves play.

I think talk of europa is a bit premature.

Agree - Europa is a bit early for us (& anyway don't think we will quite get there anyway)

Fosun targeted promotion in 3 years so we are already a year ahead of schedule so can consolidate somewhere around 10th then kick on. Be surprised if we made any significant signing this window (unless the deal of the century got offered) - then serious business to improve & deepen the squad in the summer.

Exactly as DW says. If we want to stay with 2 up top we need at least one more striker. We literally only have Raul and Jota who can play there, that was a major issue. I'm still happy to have one or two wingers/IFs on the bench to change things.

Plus Saiss really isn't a CB, he slides in way too much.

Yeah eventually we do. But now as you say isn’t the time. We aren’t going to sign genuine quality and even if we do we will get terrible value.

Most football fans are idiots. They know who Charlie Austin is and see he has scored some goals but don’t actually understand how he plays or the fact that was ages ago. Bloke on WM the other day suggested bloody Shane Long....

We will definitely need another forward if we're going two up top but that's for the summer. Bit of a conundrum isn't it? Jota's form is red hot and Raul is undroppable so what do you aim for? Someone not quite as good who can fill in and is happy to sit on the bench or someone to replace either of them? I think most of us are in agreement that we should only upgrade players and not buy ones who aren't as good, but if you're going to upgrade on either it's going to cost a fucking fortune. If we go down the 'different option' route (read as not as good) then you get far better value in the summer.

Having said all of that we don't own Raul yet.

I think Dendoncker has shown that we can and will buy classy players and then make them earn the time on the pitch.

I wonder how Bonatini would do alongside someone up top?

I guess the club have already decided he's off now though.

A slower, less mobile version of Raul

I'm not saying we won't, we also buy players and throw them straight in. But what do you aim for as an extra forward?

Raul and Jota have 10 goals between them since the start of December*, sadly Leo is not going to get near that mark, whatever you think of him as a footballer. Now we've changed the system, the emphasis is very much on those strikers (because that's what they are) to score goals, link up play is lovely and all and you have to fit our general style of play but ultimately you have to be sticking your fair share away.

*This with Jota missing three weeks as well
