Refereeing question

Refs use earpieces when using the extra officials behind the goals in European matches and talk to each other in real time. There's no reason a TV ref couldn't be miked up to give assistance for instances such as making sure the correct player is sent off.

The more input to this the better. I intend to write down any suggestions, and present them to the referee co-ordinator in Leicesterhire.

Pick up any newspaper on a Sunday morning, and usually the headlines are over a refereeing decision. We all want to enjoy our football, and surely it would be better if we were discussing the football, rather than the match officials.

Need to apply the rules they had (I thought) already put in place in that only the Captain could approach & speak to the Ref. If we could rid of the mass confrontations it might give a bit more thinking time to make the decision rather than a clamour of voices in his ear.

Would agree though with the use of video conf by the 4th official partic for incidents like penalty decisions. Game has been stopped & wouldn't take long the review - Bournemouth's second penalty yesterday would have been overturned. Don't blame the Ref as in real time it looked a good call, but a review shows no contact & Arter going down easily in anticipation. Decision would be overturned & a FK to Boro (whether Arter got any sanction would depend of their view of whether he deliberately dived or went down instinctively in anticipation of contact that didn't come)

It would have to be up to the Ref as to whether he referred a decision & merely to confirm that what he saw was correct or not (as in Rugby - and we saw yesterday how influential that was) - clubs could not be given a right to raise challenges. Don't have a problem though with the 4th official advising re wrong player sending offs

Alan Shearer has criticised the fitness of referees. Sorry, but that is nonsense. Referees now are fitter than they have ever been.

Are you including a certain referee who sent of Sako with that statement?

Yes, because he would have had to pass the pre season fitness test, which believe me is fairly tough nowadays.

But where Shearer gets it wrong is he uses an example where Lee Mason was a long way behind play in the West Ham v Sunderland game. Shearer knows as well as anyone that a referee can be caught out by a long punt upfield. There is nothing he can do if a defender kicks the ball 60 yards up the pitch. Usain Bolt would struggle in that situation.

Shearer also conveniently forgets that most referees are older than the players, and as such are likely to be a little bit slower.

It's all well and good passing the pre season fitness test but aren't they done in June/July?

They should have to reach a minimum standard each month IMO. One test a year isn't enough.

If you say you're fit enough, prove it.

I'd like to see more use made of "dissent" and Rugby-style refereeing - surround the referee, and you're booked. Talk to the referee if you're not the captain, you're in trouble unless you're ultra polite. Give referees the space they need to officiate properly. Equally, referees to refer to players exclusively by shirt colour and number, so just "blue 3", "gold 10" and "red 17".

Warn clubs that this is the way it will be before the season starts, and don't bottle it the first time players try it on.

I totally agree with you. We need to end this culture of surrounding the referee. And while the authorities need to do more, as with many things, the football clubs are the ones who could stop it. The players are their employees, and should be made aware of what is and is not acceptable.

I have watched a few games this weekend, a couple live, and a couple on TV, and the referees have been excellent. See referees are not always bad...

England Womens U19s must play the last 18 seconds of their European qualifier after the referee messed up. England had a penalty deep into stoppage time. They scored but the referee disallowed the goal for encroachment but then restarted with an indirect free kick to Norway instead of a retake!

"Bizarrely, both Norway and England will play their final group matches before the final minute of the Norway match is replayed"

Best thing is there want even any encroachment

Next season in Leicestershire, Sunday leagues will be allowed to use rolling substitutes. The local referees association have voiced concerns about how this will work. Does anyone know of other Sunday leagues that use rolling substitutes, and does it work?

Only know of 5a-side and 7 a-side leagues that use rolling subs (they under the local FA control). 5 a-side it is done when the game is playing but the 7 a-side games you have to do it when there is a break in play.

I think that in the Sunday leagues, the substitutes will have to be named before the game starts, and substitutions can only be made when there is a break in play. Any player who has been sent off will not be allowed back on. While I welcome any initiative that helps to revive Sunday football, I just think it could be difficult for the referee to monitor the situation. There could be substitutions going on on a regular basis, and it could well be that a player not named comes onto the pitch.
