Refereeing question

Pedant alert: It'd be a one game ban.

The sheer arrogance of Mike Jones leads me to believe these people are schooled to think they are always right.

As I understand it, he refused to admit that he sent off the wrong player.

If he did that after the game after seeing the incident again, I retract my comment about his demotion being harsh. Once he had seen the video replay he had no option but to say he got it wrong, He had a decent defence to say why he had got it wrong so hardly needed to hide away from it.

So another example highlighting why the retrospective action system is a load of bollocks. When is it going to change

When are they going to take the power away from referees so they can no longer continue to ruin the game?

It is a difficult balancing act though. I really don't want the idea of the referee as the final arbiter on incidents in the game taken away, except in exceptional circumstances. My massive concern is that the retrospective action system has fucked it up. Referee makes a mistake, and he is demoted. They are terrified of that, and so will do anything to worm out of admitting an error, which then leads to nonsense like this. Roger East hasn't admitted the mistake, and has made up a load of bollocks about it. He has been found out and demoted. It would be FAR FAR better, if the retrospective action committee, whomever they may be, would say "refereeing mistake - we have asked the referees association to discuss it with the official, he stays on the premier league list" unless there is a succession of rubbish. Then at least a referee could feel he didn't have to doctor his report to stay on the premier league list.

Further to that, if a referee was making regular woeful decisions (I am looking at you, Jones) he should NOT be demoted. He should be removed until he passes some form of training and satisfies the refereeing authorities he is up to the task of top flight work. Being shit should never mean you are simply allowed to be shit to less "important" teams away from the Sky and MOTD scrutiny.

So... on top of getting the worst referees possible at Molineux this season, how do we get an out of shape, useless, 18st Weeble "gracing" the pitch today? What happened to basic fitness tests for them? Absolute joke who had clearly told his "assistants" to not assist him! (Shakes head in disgust)

At any level on the pyramid, officials have to pass fitness tests before the season. The higher the level you officiate, the tougher the fitness test. So any referee operating in the football league must have passed the most stringent of tests.

Do they get tested throughout the season or is just at the start?

Just once, usually in late June. Though of course the assessors will be expected to pick up any fitness problems in any given match.

Seems a bit odd not to do one in the middle of the season.

Phil Dowd in the Prem looks like he is ready to die after 10 mins of a games and the ref for us today was struggling to move.

Well this guy clearly had a heavy Christmas/New Year

To be fair Darlo, if there are issues with a referees fitness, they can be asked to take another fitness test, though this rarely happens.

They have regular checks on their fitness, but the pre season one is the important one where they are deemed fit enough to referee at the level they are at. I very much doubt that a referees fitness changes that much from June until March.

Must be the treacle on the pitches that is making it difficult for Mr Dowd then

Phil does indeed struggle with his fitness, something that is regularly mentioned in his assessments, but his marks from the clubs are up there with the best.

Today's ref will be back in the Vanarama before the end of the week.

It gladdens my heart to see a referee taking action for players diving. Well done Mr Oliver.

I don't say it very often Frank but i think he's done well tonight.

Oliver is excellent generally. I wish there were more like him, I don't enjoy calling out awful refs but sadly I have to a lot of the time, it plagues our game.
