Refereeing question

I do not think that Leicester can have too many complaints about the second penalty, but to be fair the first one did seem a little harsh.

Good Lord Frank! Are you becoming self-parody? It didn't get within a reindeer's bellow of Morgan's arm! Appalling decision from quite possibly the worst referee in the history of the premier league.

Three times he has diddled Leicester City this season. On the second, he was demoted to diddle us. He needs to be removed from the refereeing list rather than demoted. Appalling official. Just beyond dreadful.

Out of interest Frank why do you think they can't have complaints about the second penalty?

On the second penalty, the defenders arm is away from his body, and while a similar incident at Stoke went unpunished, it is one of those situations where a referee is likely to give a penalty. And I think Stoke should have had one.

It was the wrong decision, but silly as it sounds, I can see why he gave the penalty. Morgan went sliding in with his arms outstretched, and maybe the referee felt the ball hit the arm first. But yes it was a very poor decision.

It's away from his body Frank because he is turning, you can't play with your hands by your side and it was very much in a natural position. This is the reason why i think referee's get so much wrong, they don't know the game well enough or don't seem to apply the knowledge they have of it into making their decisions.

Mentioned it on the live match thread but wait until you see the non-red card for Gardos. Incredible stuff.

Some absolute shockers today. Like beyond reason. Problem is you can't sack them all!

I would, they all behave like they are all still amateurs so make them so.

I thought referees had to be certain an offence had been committed before awarding a decision and not use guesswork. That would look great in his report "I didn't actually see the ball hit his hand but it could of so I gave the "big" team a penalty"

Why don't more footballers become referees when they retire?

Probably can't be bothered. Pay is better being coach/pundit (or they just don't need money) and being a ref isn't glamorous, particularly as they would have to start from Sunday league.

MOTD was unbelieveable how bad so many refs were.

I thought this too. If there is doubt in the refs mind, the decision shouldn't be given?

I've a refereeing question. How the fuck does Mike Jones continue to get work? 3 weekends out the last 4 he's had complete shockers. The one he didn't, was when he was suspended. Surely there is evidence to call into question his competency? At the very least, there's a significant training need there. Had I performed that bad across 4 weeks at work, I'd be worried about job security.

There was a big difference between the Smalling handball and the second on at Leicester. One was in a natural position the other wasn't, one made a movement towards the ball the other didn't. One a definite penalty the other 50/50.

I think the main reason is because they would have to start at level 7 and work their way up as other referees have to. Some ex players have said that they should be fast tracked into the Football League

Which is exactly what rugby union has done, Glen Jackson being the prime example. But why would the FA want to do something that Rugby Union has done, after all, they use technology to assist referees on crucial decisions, and that would be akin to coming into the 20th century (not the 21st)!

Former ref Keith Hackett has launched a scathing attack on the standards of match officials. He wants a big shake-up of the system, and in particular the Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the body responsible for referees in this country.

His recommendations:

Dispense with the services of the current PGMOL General Manager [Mike Riley, I think]
Dispense with the services of Keren Barratt [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keren_Barratt]
Bin the Invigilators; this performance review procedure is not working
Appoint Headhunters to find a new general manager. Howard Webb, Peter Walton, Hugh Dallas, should be invited for interview
The PGMOL Management team would no longer require the attendance of Neale Barry, FA “Head of Senior Refereeing.” I suggest that he has failed to deliver a succession plan and few referees of any quality are coming through
Re-assert what is required from the manager of the National List. More National List referees need to be developed in the succession plan

In addition to this course of action I would place on immediate notice that the services of the following referees will not be required for next season:-

MIKE JONES
ANDRE MARRINER
LEE MASON
CHRIS FOY
LEE PROBERT (IF HE FAILS FITNESS TEST)

They would be re-trained to become part of the team of referee coaches to ensure that every game has a coach in attendance.

Hackett was a very good ref and also well respected when the head of the association so this is pretty powerful stuff. I think we all know what Wolves fans think of Jones and Marriner, both up their with Lynch, Halsey and Rennie in terms of incompetence at Wolves matches (more than that in the case of Marriner).

What is your view on his comments Frank?

I need some time to fully digest what Keith Hackett has said. But one thing that strikes me straight away is that he wants Messrs Jones, Marriner, Mason, Foy and Probert to be left off the list for next season, yet he wants them to be part of the team of referee coaches. I am not sure that I quite understand the logic in that.
