Refereeing question

Look at the absolute state of this penalty given for Derby on Saturday:

And then Everton don't get one when Medel completely cleans out Baines. New season, same nonsense.

Stay on your feet. Tackling isn't a quality to aspire to, its something you have to do when you don't have the ball. (think that was Xavi Alonso?)

ref question:

The ball is out on the right hand side of the pitch, in the penalty area the striker is looking to make a move in readiness for a cross. As he does this, the centre half grabs him and holds on and then pushes him to the floor. Just seconds later the cross from the right comes in but the striker is on the floor. What does the ref do in this situation?

In my mind, that is a foul and a penalty. I ask this because last night v Walsall, this happened to McAlinden and the ref watched it happen and when the ball went out of play, he had a word with the defender but nothing else.

Penalty all day long. So long as the ball's in play it doesn't matter whether the foul's anywhere near the action.

I really don't get what the ref was doing then. He saw the grab and push and basically bollocked the defender for it. Top reffing

From the laws of the game:

The following conditions must be met for an offence to be considered a foul:
• it must be committed by a player
• it must occur on the fi eld of play
• it must occur while the ball is in play

Holding an opponent includes the act of preventing him from moving past or
around using the hands, the arms or the body.

If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area and continues
holding him inside the penalty area, the referee must award a penalty kick.

Should have been a foul and a YC.

If you think about it, it's no different to a striker being penalised for backing into a defender when a long ball's pumped forward, the freekick being awarded long before the ball arrives. You see that all the time.

You can't give a free kick/penalty while the ball's not in play - so if you're the keeper and I'm the attacker, and you smash me in the face while we're waiting for a corner to be taken, you'll get sent off but it's not a penalty.

The same player then did the same thing to McAlinden again literally seconds later.

I didn't see the penalty as it was at the other end but I'm assuming this was given for something similar?

Oh and the ref saw it last night but because the cross didn't come in he wrongly didn't penalise it.

The penalty was awarded for holding on Batth and pushing him to the ground.

Leeds' Rodolph Austin was sent off for two yellows playing for Jamaica vs Panama last night.

Now this might just be me, but I think the ref's bought the number 19's antics a bit too easily.

The second one is brilliant!

An interesting one I saw yesterday evening in the highlights of the MK Dons v Swindon Town game. Swindon had Nathan Byrne sent off for stamping. At full speed it clearly looks like a stamp, so I think the referee was correct, but I wonder whether it was just a question of Byrne being late on the tackle?

He was definitely just late Frank, he goes for the ball and was very unlucky to get sent off.

I've only just seen the Altidore/Sagna incident.

If Atkinson gives the free kick should he not be sending Sagna off for preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity?

Just catching up with MOTD after being away all weekend. Appalling refereeing by Atkinson. Really really poor.

Mr Atkinson certainly made a mistake, and one which all referees make occasionally. He blew too early for the foul, and I am sure he wished he hadn't, but these things do happen from time to time.

We had one yesterday, Sako got the ball deep in our own half and the Swindon player tried to rugby tackle him but bounced off him, Sako was free and was ready for a great counter and the ref pulled the game back for a free kick to us.

Pretty much summed him up - over officious, petty and missed the big decisions (Pritchard should have walked, as you said on the verdict thread McDonald was lucky not to get a second yellow too). Properly milked his injury too. Mrs Ref came on and promptly gave us every decision! Splendid stuff.
