O'Neil Confirmed

Fair point. Nuno we know was good and South Korea was never a likely destination for any PL manager.
Still in the Champ when SK came in for Mick. Was late 2007.

He very nearly did go.

I think I must have some on ignore by accident, I've seen no-one on here say they think O'Neil is a good appointment, quite the opposite. Everyone is assuming he will be terrible and will probably fail.

I think willing to give him time is being misconstrued as “good appointment”, when in actual fact it’s just because I, like many others on here, know nothing about him.

I did the same with Lage.

Lage was way different for me.

- We sacked Nuno (fucking stupid)
- He was objectively our best manager for ~40 years
- We'd gone 7th/7th and been genuinely ace pre-Covid, Lage did not have a CV that fit that kind of brief
- Lage is a fucking wanker (personal bias may apply here)

Here we seem to have said we're ok with bottom half and minimal spending for at least a year so the landscape is different.

I was actually quite excited by the Lage appointment. I'd seen a few bits of Benfica during their title winning season and I was hopeful he'd turn us into a side that created a lot, that went well.

I'm in wait and see mode for O'Neil.

GO deserves our backing to start with. Let’s face it we’ve recruited all sorts of managers in the past and not one of them has done such a good job that they’ve been poached by another club. It would be ironic, and extremely surprising, if GO was to become the first to be poached. In no way do I think he’s a good appointee but now he’s here let’s hope we’re all wrong and give him our support until there are grounds not to.
None of them have left but there have been managers that turned down other opportunities. Nuno turned down Everton and Mick turned down South Korea.

There seems to be an opinion too that O’Neil must be crap/cheap as he’s out of a job. When did we last poach a manager in one? Saunders? I’m pretty sure Nuno had left Porto.

Saunders and before him McGhee.

No others in the last 50 years.

The oldies on here laud John Barnwell, his only job before us was Peterborough.

13th. But no excuse for footballers to surrender like that, really.

Not saying it was Lop’s fault but it was concerning at the time.
If a team gets done 5 and 6 within a couple of weeks it absolutely is the manager's fault. Our worst and joint second worst defeats in the PL including under McCarthy and Jones

Jenkins was his Asst at Bournemouth, he was at Portsmouth with Derry and Robson has been around for ever, so I'd imagine they are his guys. Beyond that it's now club appointments at fitness, analyst etc rather than the manager's
It's probably best to keep some roles "in house", it provides continuity between head coach appointments.

I know some managers will insist on having their own guys in place but provided our guys are proficient in what they do it's got to be better in the long run.

Yeah. He seemed to come with a bit of ‘pedigree’ having won a title, and there was talk floating around that Benfica’s owners had done him over a bit.

He’s 16 points clear in Brazil at the moment. Maybe we should get him back 😉

Jones lost 0-5 once but Mick never did.

TC lost 0-5 at home to Man Utd (thanks Zubar).

And saves money when you sack them

I'd seen quite a lot of Benfica as well and had the exact opposite opinion tbh.

Obviously the failed Michael Beale job. And he’d only managed in the Championship for about fifteen games…

Feels like this “young British coach” thing isn’t an entirely new tactic.

We did offer Gerry Francis the job in 1994 ahead of Graham Taylor. Was still at QPR then.

I seem to remember quite a few of us being quite gutted about Beale at the time too, even though he has less experience than GON currently has.

Think it was more despair at the situation the club had got into

Fair enough.

Like I say, I’m not pro-GON, just indifferent. Despite my reservations around Lop I’d obviously prefer the Europa League winning head coach with a flurry of signings this year, but it’s not the situation we’re in sadly.
