Everton 4-0 Wolves: Verdict Thread

I mean just think for a minute how fucking easy it is to at least vaguely try to thwart a Sean Dyche team as we enter 2025. It's not like you don't have any warning of what's coming.

Don't give away set pieces. If you must, mark up properly. Don't pick gutless shells of players who quite obviously won't fancy it. Be prepared for a scrap. Get at the obvious weak links they have that he puts in the team every week because they're honest lads who work hard.

We of course did the opposite to all that.

Woo hoo… MotD game time. Did I miss much tonight? Been out and not watched the game

Still of the opinion that our problems are significantly weighted towards tactical rather than personnel. IMO this squad is not significantly less talented than our best ones under Nuno, but amazingly everyone looks quite shit when a coach who doesn't understand positionality tries to coach a sport almost completely about positionality.
This squad is significantly less talented than our best ones under Nuno and Nuno is a better manager. Cunha is the only current player who gets into Nuno’s t best team. Our keeper is worse, our defenders are worse, our midfielders are not a patch on Neves and Mountinho. For me, it isn’t even a close comparison…Wolves are worse now individually and collectively.

Neves, Moutinho > Gomes, Lemina, Andre and Foyke
Boly, Saiss > Dawson, Toti, Beuno
Raul > JSL
Jota and Cunha a toss up
Adama > Hwang, Forbs, Guedes, R Gomes…it takes something special not to be able to replace Adama
Rui Patricio > Sa and Johnstone
Jonny > Ait-Nouri
Semedo is a constant
Coady a better captain than either Kilman and Lemina

That is some significant reduction in quality. That is reflected in our league position. We could be doing better, should be doing better…but there’s no comparison. The club have asset stripped and replaced them paint stripper.

Good post, and I’d agree with the general point. I’d suggest Boly, Saiss, Adama (usual caveats) and Coady are likely to be preferred because of the system and coaching provided by Nuno though, rather than straight quality.

Would you put Dawson, Beuno and Toti in Nuno’s team over those three? I wouldn’t. But I’d put Boly and Saiss in this team every single day.

Exactly this.

And when you read this, it’s all total common sense.

We all know it, every football fan knows it and anyone that’s ever seen a Sean Dyche team knows it.

Everyone knows it. Apart from Gary O’Neil.

Suspect I’ll have little resistance to your argument here. However… I think the current three have the possibility of providing a better or as good a CB under Nuno as Saiss. Boly less likely, granted.

Appreciate your point, but I haven’t suggested there’s been no drop off.

I’m still a nut and think we should have put Romain back in midfield, but c’est la vie.

Just got back in from the game. We had a great time rolling through the songs of the Nuno era!

Less said about the game, result or that twat in the dugout.
So it’s all of your faults that Gary’s feelings were hurt. Shameful.

He’s a decent manager, but he can get absolutely fucked. I’m never getting over his handling of Zouma.

As if a Sean Dyche managed team has got 2 x 4-0 wins over us now.

Sickening.

Were 6 of those 8 goals set pieces too?

Just come in from the pub so forgive my lack of what happened tonight, only kept abreast of the game from my lads ranting on WhatsApp.
Did the players just throw the towel in or were they just completely confused by GONs instructions? Reports sounded horrific, if he isn't sacked by 10am tomorrow I really fear for our club in the future.

There's a lot to take in from this.

*Rodrigo looks visibly upset.
*Andre seems to be agreeing with what's being chanting.
*Lemina stood with hands behind back, not sure what to make of that?
*GON doesn't acknowledge fans, knowing he'll get more abuse I guess.

It's all so ugly, but totally justified and understandable.
Lemina doesn’t seem a good captain, certainly not in a backs against the wall situation. Too emotional, too sulky. Total opposite of a Coady for example.

Lemina can’t even lead by example skill/effort wise as he’s been shoe horned everywhere and isn’t in the team on merit. Right real mess getting him in the team has and is causing.

Were a team with no backbone though. Like who are the alternatives? Keeper is a clown and a hot head fighting the crowd. Dawson the only option of the CBs but he looks finished. Semedo a sheepish player, RAN too laid back andd does what he wants, nothing like captain material. Gomes a young kid. Cunha your only other option and he’s not remotely captain material either.

The only player in the entire squad I’d back to step up when the chips are down is Tommy Doyle, and he can’t get near a start. How have we assembled a team of mentally and physically weak players. And it’s not like they have great technical ability to compensate. Guedes, Sarabia, Hwang, Forbs, R Gomes, Bellegarde all just 🤮. Nothing players.

Everton no more than ordinary, yet 4-0 flattered us. The sort of defensive performance usually given by a team that knows it is going down. With our league position and the importance and opportunity of getting something from the game that 1st half performance was unacceptable and the lack of 2nd half improvement was totally unforgivable.

Sa at fault for the 1st and too easily bullied for the 3rd. Don't command your area and you will never be a top keeper, but don't organize a wall for a free kick and you shouldn't be a professional keeper at all.

As others have said, Dawson's decline is becoming more noticeable. Maybe he isn't fully fit, but like Sa he now lacks the commanding presence that gives confidence to the other players.

Swap Sa and Pickford and I don't think we lose the game - Pickford was everything Sa was not - confident, assertive, competent. Swap Dawson and Tarkowski and we win the game at a canter.

I have never been a vocal GON critic and always believed we will finish mid-table. I just don't see how that can happen any more. Every game seems to produce yet another defensive shambles. GON hasn't been dealt the best hand by Shi, but he is not making the most of what cards we do have.
