New - The things that really annoy you

A few days away in the UK booked for January.
Rail unions have just listed the dates of strike action and for the 3rd UK visit, they're wiping us out.
I get why they're striking and I agree with their case, I really do.
But having been a railwayman for 20 years, I just don't get - and please anyone on here who can explain why this is a bad idea, please feel free, - Why they don't just turn up as they are rostered to and work the trains but refuse to collect revenue/check tickets.
Public get to where they want to go and the train companies feel the pinch.

If the bastard Ferry companies didn't operate a cartel (and the corrupt government stopped allowing them) I'd get the ferry over and drive.
How can it possibly be cheaper to sail from Ireland to Spain 1019kms, than it is from Ireland to the UK 107kms?

It would be a shit protest if things ran properly wouldn't it.

On most stations you can't even get to the platform unless you have a ticket and get through the electric gates. So the strike would turn into everything as normal and a few people from smaller stations getting a free train journey unless they got off at a bigger station and can't scan their ticket to get out.

Just last Friday I chit-chatted with a random stranger walking the dog. Turns out he was walking his puppy that he’d got on retiring at 60 as a GP 3 months ago. The guy was borderline traumatised from his experience as a GP with the way the role and patient care had changed over the years, and as with many other industries and professions, covid severely amplified changes that were already taking place.

This guy was very troubled because the role had changed so much it became to give his patients the care they deserved. He mentioned the emotional blackmail placed by employers on caring workers and the abuse of that, and in his situation the continued pressure applied even after retirement - the NHS has recently called for newly retired GP’s to come out of retirement to help ease the current crisis and he was being badgered about that, but in no fit state to help.

The poor guy was in such a state the puppy appeared to be some sort of therapy. If we’d stop working people like slaves until they break and start valuing them instead maybe people such this fella would’ve been willing and able to help out.

His assessment of the situation sounded horrendous and I suspect it’s not just GP’s feeling like that either.
This must be wrong, the bloke is making it up!
I actually heard and saw on tv Boris promising and saying these guys and nurses, were heroes and he has already put plans in place to look after these heroes...
So, er whadderya sayin'?

The disruption is part of the protest. That's why Stop Oil protesters don't just hold up placards at the side of the road.

Is it really more expensive Ireland-uk than Ireland Spain?
Had a look the other day at ferries, uk-Spain was about 800 quid, UK-Ireland was about 300

Just checked...
Brittany Ferries: Mid December; Rosslare to Bilbao; Economy return; €366 includes 2 x Full dinners per Adult. (2,038 kms)
Irish Ferries; Mid December; Dublin to Holyhead; Economy return; €482 no meals included: (214 kms)
Robbing bastards.

How much on Stena?

We didn't pay that much for the car, 3 people and access to the lounge in August

All about demand though isnt it, that bilbao price will probably be nearer a grand in summer.

Haven't checked Kenny, but they're usually only a tenner difference. They even sail within 10 minutes of each other both ways, You follow the other on across the sea.

I just had a look, slightly different details to you but ,
In the summer next year, Anglesey-Dublin return, 240 quid.
Rosslare ro Bilbao, 614 quid, that's without a cabin which adds 300 quid.....you really need a cabin, 33 hours on the boat.

Just checked Stena again mid Dec €398 economy return. If I only wanted a couple of days they knock off €100 for 'Short stay'.

Just checked that and with a cabin each way it's €656. All food included.

To Spain with a car return? I can't get anywhere near that.
AND its on their brand spanking new ferry too! Admittedly in a inside 4 berth cabin (non sharing with strangers.)
I'd suggest you come via Ireland but Irish ferries will shag you with the fare.

Re the why can’t they work without taking fares, I think the government outlawed those type of strikes, and they’re trying to outlaw strikes full stop.

Puncture for me too this morning @lemonjelly

Spare inner tube and a mini-pump to the rescue ....

I don't know if they still do them, but when I lived in the south of France, I commuted to Ireland every 2 weeks and I sailed with P&O Freight services. Now I know P&O dropped that service but it was half the price of the Irish Ferry which was right next to it in Rosslare, to Cherbourg, you got an ensuite cabin with 2 windows and all food was free, It had Sky sports in the bar and in the lounge, it only ever had about 30 passengers as it was a container oriented ship so only licenced for 25 cars. Fucking brilliant, PLUS it always sailed, regardless of the weather and how rough it was. Only restriction then was if it was rough they didn't take animals.
What I'm suggesting is, check out the freight ferries, there are a good few of them. Oh, by the way... Because it's a freight service family facilities are very sparse and fuck all for kids to do.
