New - The things that really annoy you

Puncture for me too this morning @lemonjelly

Spare inner tube and a mini-pump to the rescue ....
Pretty close to your half way point too mate!
Glad you had the kit to apply an instant fix. Also even more glad it wasn't raining on you!
Managed toi cycle in today as my repair worked. I have zero confidence in any mechanical abilities, so the fact that I was able to get the inner tube back in, sort the tyre and pop the wheel back on the bike all just in half time last night felt like a miracle for me to do!

I'm a fair weather cyclist 😁

I could do with some really, tbh.
I don't have mudguards either. have been advised they're pretty pointless/ineffective?
I wear waterproof trousers instead!

Now THAT is a very odd remark!
Are you telling me you've never TRIED them?
I don't mean those fancy little bits of plastic that stick straight parallel to the road out for 10", I mean the full things that stop anything more than vertical.

I could do with some mudguards. I get covered in mud splashes if it’s really wet. I do wear waterproof top & trousers though so it’s not too bad.

As for punctures, I do carry a repair kit and mini pump but am absolutely useless at getting my tyre off or the inner tube out so I’d just pay for someone to do it for me! Fingers crossed, I’ve been ok with this bike but I do have that anti puncture stuff in both my tyres.

I relate to this big time T-Dan! I was filled with fear on my way home last night at the very thought of doing the repair. I was genuinely shocked at how easily I was able to get the wheel off, tyre off, tube out, fix, and then put it all back together.

Believe in yourself!

what are they, and where from mate?

They are SKS Mudrockers, a German brand I think, got them online from one of the big suppliers, not sure which one exactly but they’re readily available.

Thinking about this though, for a daily commute a standard mudguard and lightweight waterproof trouser combo is probably the way to go. I caved in under pressure from the ‘all-the-gear’ brigade and went with those for fear of committing some chronic faux pas and being made to feel like a bit of a tit. They are very good for mud to be fair, but reckon there would be better (and cheaper) alternatives for conventional use.

All that said, definitely get some sort of mudguards, you’ll soon wonder why you rode on wet roads without them. Pop the overtrousers on when it’s chucking it down and away you go.

I do believe, most tasks are not as hard as you imagine them to be, apart from surgery (although I've never tried)

True this, even quite daunting jobs often turn out not to be too bad. Main thing is to have decent tools and a bit of self confidence.
There are some great YouTube videos out there for pretty much any job you want to do.

Must look up a you tube video before taking on Kasparov with the Sicilian Defence. I’m sure I can do well.

Open or closed? Accelerated Dragon would be my choice ;)

(I've been watching too many chess videos lately).

Open. Najdorf. I would try the Poisoned Pawn but GK refused to play it in his later career. A great shame as I would have loved to have seen what he would have done with Fischer’s ideas in that opening.

Dragon is too susceptible to pawn advances and mating nets based around g7 for my liking.

Taimanov is a nice safer Sicilian option. Kalashnikov is there for the certifiable to try.
