Man Utd 1-0 Wolves: Verdict Thread

With Gomes' performance yesterday and Nunes, it does make you wonder where Lopetegui perceived Scott to play unless it was very much £25m for an option.

One thing I will say is that with Gomes, Nunes (one year on), Cunha, Silva, Neto, Sasa, heck even Hwang: there are goals in this team more so than last year.

Another I wasn't really that on board with. Don't really see what all the fuss is about with him. Hes a good player but he's not what we need, about 6 goals in 2 seasons sounds a lot like what we already have.

Not getting carried away, was a very good performance last night, that deserved 3 points. How many times have we said similar against the big clubs?

Let's see if they can play at a similar level against Bournemouth, Burnley etc, do we have a tendency to raise our game when we're in the shop window?

He's also, what, 6 or 7 years Kilman's senior? And has significant weaknesses of his own.

Prem defenders don't grow on trees, that's all.
Regards the first part I don't agree with the equivalence. In theory you'd keep Kilman rather than have a Dawson clone and have some £26m of change for additional water bottle season ticket gifts? Not on your nelly.

Certainly agree they don't grow on trees. Then again, they don't all jump or ball watch like them either.

I'd rather not have two 33 year olds as starting CBs if I could help it.

0:40 seconds in, holy fuck that's exactly how Charlotte play.

No wonder United were crap.

EDIT: "Matthias" Nunes lmao

Well, when I watch him get out jumped from an even standing start by someone half a foot shorter than him on Saturday, at least I can comfort myself with the thought that I've got loads more years of it to watch ahead of me.

I'm sure when he's next responsible for a goal he'll get rightfully pelted for it. As it happens, he wasn't our biggest problem (or close to it) yesterday.

I mean, it would be hard to have less goals in the team than last year...

I agree there's scoring potential in all those players, but that's still all it is until some of them start actually getting on the scoresheet

Whilst this is true, of course, I don't think we can ask for much more in terms of chance creation. Down to the players as individuals to earn the shirt, as it were.

Based on yesterday's sample size of one, I at least won't get the urge to turn the TV off as soon as we concede.

Not big on Kaptain Kilman, but Sa and RAN were maybe our only players I think that overall played a bad game. Maybe Hwang of the subs given his first touch is still atrocious and he kept trying to send shots across the Irish Sea. None of that is new though.

I think we don't have to make this a Lop v GON thing either. The way they played was similar to the pre-season so it's good to see that how Lop was training them was encouraging and positive whilst all the shit was hitting the fan. As the weeks go on, his imprint on the team will have less and less of an effect so this will be the game with the biggest "Lop effect".

It's not mutually exclusive to give GON some credit for how they played either. He had such a short turn around, the team could have ended up looking as headless as a certain Red Manchester side, but they didn't. It clearly looks like he worked with what they were doing and didn't try to enforce his own "way" on them. I don't think he will prove to be a good choice overall, and his test will come once the team does have more of his influence on it but you can't say that wasn't a good game for him. Even continued the tradition of a Wolves manager getting unfairly carded.

The main difference for me.

Last season we never scored many.
We created fuck all.
Yesterday we created multiple chances, they will against lesser defenders be easier chances, and presumably be taken

I'm wary of the keep making chances and the goals will come narrative. Have a look at the verdict thread from the early game under Lage against Utd, similar game, same result, same sentiment

There should definitely be an "if" in that line of thinking that does some serious lifting. That said, under Lage we mostly stopped creating chances in the first place.

So as long as GO is smarter than your average gerbil, I don't foresee as dramatic of a dropoff in our future this time. Though, I doubt we'll be sticking a half-dozen shots on goal every match.

EDIT: Fuck sake, Louie. 😂

Pretty sure you'll find no examples of a team regularly having an xG of >2.0 per game and also regularly actually scoring 0.

Break out the record books, boys, we're here to make history.

Exactly, lose on Saturday and O'Neil needs to stay brave at Everton. Lage didn't
Of course. But doesn’t mean the belief that if we keep creating we will start scoring more is wrong. We created less than one xG per game last season. It’s not sustainable. Hopefully GON can change that.
