I'd go for a minor tactical tweak here. Maybe as a one off, maybe for longer if it works quite well.

--------------Bennett--------Coady-------Boly------------

Jonny---------Moutinho----Dendoncker---Neves-----Vinagre

---------------------------Jota----------------------------------------------

---------------------------------Jimenez-------------------------------------

2009/10: L 0-3 (H), L 0-1 (A)
2003/4: W 1-0 (H), D 3-3 (A)
2001/2: L 0-2 (H), L 0-1 (A)
1999/0: W 4-1 (H), W 1-0 (A)

I’d agree but I can’t see Nuno going for it, I reckon we’ll be going with the 3-4-3. Definitely Jonny to the right and Vinagre in though and I’d be surprised to see Costa starting after the last two games. Jota hasn’t been much better but I reckon yesterday’s subbing will be the rocket up the arse he needs, he’s really got to step up now. Will we have enough to beat City? Maybe, maybe not, but as long as we play as well as we did yesterday we can’t ask for more.

I think we still have to believe in ourselves and what we do well so we take the game to City while still retaining the balance that 3-4-3 provides us.

We might see a riff on last season's game with citeh.

Rui
Bennett - Dendonker - Coady - Boly - Jonny
Neves - Moutinho
Traore - Raul - Jota

I'm not sure Nuno will start Traore in this one, I can see Costa (or maybe Gibbs-White) put in that position to support us defensively. You can get one thing wrong with your shape against City and life becomes even more difficult than it already was!

I may be wrong, but iirc whenever we switched to 3-5-2 in-game last season, it was to put on N'Diaye/MGW and have them as an attacking mid behind two forwards, rather than adding a third standard CM, or even DM.

Plus Nuno didn't seem especially overawed by City last season in the League Cup either, and neither did the players. No idea if Doherty will start - it could be like Ruddy last season, where he was so clearly our number one choice for a specific position that he'll be given the chance to make amends for a bad game rather than being immediately dropped. Can easily see us starting the same as the Leicester game, but Traore in place of Costa and Dendoncker replacing someone on the bench.

It was Proslo generally. I think at Reading we actually played Neves behind Saiss and Alf towards the end of the game but that was only time I remember us doing it like that

I don't see us changing the shape as it would completely negate us on the counter attack in this game and I don't see Nuno as a man who plays for a 0-0 draw (even if that did happen against City in the cup last season, we should have won with our chances!).

Our current system is very nicely balanced so I wouldn't change that. Removing one of the IF's (who are vital in tracking back on the flanks) makes things more complicated taking one of the CM's out. It either means you have a CM running like a nutter from left to right or Neves or Mouthinho dropping out wide from their respective positions, where they will be less effective when we do get the ball.

I would just bring Vinny in for Doc and swap Jonny over and Traore in for Costa and maintain things as they are. I suspect Dendoncker will be on the bench I can't see him being ready to start yet.

The key to this game is the counter, we will have long sustained periods of pressure so we need to be able to bring the ball out quickly if we want any chance of getting a goal. Jota - Jiminez and Traore should in theory be perfect for that.

I just hope we dont get spanked to badly.

I don't see a formation change in the offing, just Traore for Costa. Doherty will play if fit.

If it were me, I'd make the wing back change everyone is calling for, but I don't think Nuno sees Doherty the way TWF does. If Dendoncker plays it should be instead of Coady rather than Bennett, but I think he'll be on the bench.

Anyone who genuinely thinks Doherty was our third best player last season needs exiling to Syria.

Man Utd can sell Paul McGrath, Paul Ince, Mark Hughes, Andrei Kanchelskis, Jaap Stam, David Beckham and Ruud van Nistelrooy over the years, but Matt Doherty is indispensable to Wolves, I see.

Can’t see what he says. Fortunately.

The amount of people tweeting me saying Doherty should be dropped...guy was 3rd in the POTS vote last year (ahead of Boly, Jota, Douglas, Cavaleiro etc etc) . Has one off day and suddenly he's no better than Simon Coleman. Indispensable imo and a crucial component.

"OW, if Hector Bellerin, Thomas Meunier or Kyle Walker are available then it sort of changes things but in the current Wolves squad I wouldn't drop him. That's sort of all I'm saying...and not comparing him to David Beckham at Man United" :zytrafumay: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:

I think the top reply to that tweet is about the fact he isn't Portuegeuse and that's why Tim loves him or something like that. Tim is talking bollocks every player has to step up and we can see some that are showing signs of being able to do so and a few that may not. Doc has been poor in both games, I accept the fact he was running in to cover on the first goal but he wasn't under any pressure so to emphatically head it in like that seems inconceivable.

He will get a few more chances before he is binned but he will need to improve drastically to be anything other than cover.

Same could be said of Costa who just isn't doing enough for me to justify his place. Jota improved massively from the Everton game Costa on the other hand just don't look like he can cope at the moment.

Proof that Spiers is a complete tool.

The Bantz brothers are obsessed with Doherty as they think he's the only player we have who can play that position. Their defence of him is driven as much by perceived necessity as it is views on his ability. The notion of Jonny moving over and us playing our U19 European champion left back is lost on them.

I was going to suggest playing a three in the middle also for this one also. A chance to give Dendoncker a run-out without having to drop Bennett for his good form and should help us retain the ball in the middle. I think against this kind of team we are seriously going to struggle in the middle of the park, will look a bit lightweight if only a two.

Out: Doherty, Costa
In: Vinagre, Dendoncker

Expecting a comfortable City victory here, but hoping to come away from the ground with a performance I can be proud of.

That’s what I’m doing for. Harsh on Coady but that’s our strongest 11.
