Man City (H) 25/8 Build-Up Thread

Watching Hudds take on City...nothing to fear really. Struggled to defend a long throw in and errrr well that is it really. Helped by Huddersfield playing with 10 defenders and a Lonergan tribute act in goal

Think we will line up in a similar way to the cup last season.

Bennett at RB, Deondoncker at RCB. Traore in for Costa and he will be vital to use having any chance at all (we only really have a 5%, at best, chance as it is). When we do get the ball we need to be smart with it. Hoping this is a game where the likes of Neves & Jota are proper up for it and play like they are trying persuade Pep to sign them.

This sort of game is what Traore or a player like that can excel in. Being able to surge off will give time to regroup and releave pressure.

I was going to suggest playing a three in the middle also for this one also. A chance to give Dendoncker a run-out without having to drop Bennett for his good form and should help us retain the ball in the middle. I think against this kind of team we are seriously going to struggle in the middle of the park, will look a bit lightweight if only a two.

Out: Doherty, Costa
In: Vinagre, Dendoncker

Expecting a comfortable City victory here, but hoping to come away from the ground with a performance I can be proud of.

That's the gist of it, tbh :)

I'd go for a minor tactical tweak here. Maybe as a one off, maybe for longer if it works quite well.

-------------------------------Patricio------------------------

--------------Bennett--------Coady-------Boly------------

Jonny---------Moutinho----Dendoncker---Neves-----Vinagre

---------------------------Jota----------------------------------------------

---------------------------------Jimenez-------------------------------------

2017/18: D 0-0 (A, LC, lost on pens)
2011/12: L 0-2 (H), L 1-3 (A), L 2-5 (H, LC)
2010/11: W 2-1 (H), L 3-4 (A)
2009/10: L 0-3 (H), L 0-1 (A)
2003/4: W 1-0 (H), D 3-3 (A)
2001/2: L 0-2 (H), L 0-1 (A)
1999/0: W 4-1 (H), W 1-0 (A)
1997/8: D 2-2 (H), W 1-0 (A)
1996/7: W 3-0 (H), W 1-0 (A)

Exactly. Gives better cover and the chance of a breakaway. I like the thought of 352 or similar to give better cover defensively and free up Neves and Moutiniou to create and attack. Suits the squad we have I m o

Having seen the highlights and read the reports, Doherty versus Mendy has the potential to be a huge disadvantage.

The Bantz brothers are obsessed with Doherty as they think he's the only player we have who can play that position. Their defence of him is driven as much by perceived necessity as it is views on his ability. The notion of Jonny moving over and us playing our U19 European champion left back is lost on them.

What a pair of superfan arseholes they are. I do wonder if they are pricks on twitter deliberately just to prove their superfan status. There are a shit ton of wankers on that thread basically saying if you don't love Doherty then you're not a supporter or fan.

As for the team against City, it's a free hit so I'd play Jinks team, nothing to lose so why not. If we lose 10-1 I'm sure the superfans will remind us that Saint Matthew of Doherty was missed and would solve everything.

Unfortunately there are some real intellectually challenged individuals that follow us. You can't educate pork as my grandfather said

Matt Doherty has played 209 games for Wolves and I'd estimate I've seen 130+ of them. Anyone throws that nonsense in my direction then they will get the short shrift that they deserve.

He works reasonably hard now and so we're back to the Edwards trope of a long-serving player getting immunity because they do as well as they can (of course you do have to ignore the 4-5 years where he was a fat slob with a disgraceful attitude on and off the pitch). Fuck that, I want to see the best players I can playing for Wolves, not someone who seems alright and runs a bit. Machin could do that.

I'd love to know exactly how much leeway we're supposed to give players who cost us games, and how many points they actively cost us through not being good enough before we can call for them to be dropped. Every single point in every single match counts this year. We will be tested enough as it is through sheer strength of the opposition, let alone handing them gifts. I don't want to wait 10 games, watch Doherty be crap in all of them, end up with a substandard points total and then go "oh, he isn't good enough, but we gave him a fair go". Balls to fair. I know he isn't good enough now. These are the same fans who despise Danny Batth which is a dichotomy I've never quite worked out.

Anyway yes, Mendy will destroy him, especially if we play our normal shape with Costa or Traore in front of him as neither are very good defensively. Imagine if we had the ability to play a highly-regarded, defensively-minded full back on that side who will at least avoid being skinned continually. Oh, we do.

It's a test for Nuno because going down the blind loyalty path to the detriment of the team is never a good look. On merit there is no reason not to play Vinagre on the left and Jonny on the right. He'll probably drop Costa for being crap in the first two games which is fine, let's extend that policy to everyone.

It’s a bit of a strange one, as I’ve spoken to Rob on a few occasions and he also thinks Doherty is our weak link.

I think Martin also mentioned our transferbusiness wasn't great because we hadn't picked up new wingbacks which is why I think there may be an ulterior motive to their 'opinions' on twitter (they do like to use punctuation a lot).

I could show you some DMs about what Rob thinks on Martin’s opinion on that. Let’s say he doesn’t agree with him.

Appreciate the vote of confidence DW, but I can't actually run on my ankle at the moment....

I was thinking along these lines, and also the idea of putting Vinagre up against Walker again

Won't be both will it, one or the other

Vinagre against Walker.
Jonny against Mendy.

Walker is probably still having nightmares from getting mugged off by Vinny last season.
