Loan Watch 2024/2025

The bigger teams are now stealing the better players from the academies of teams like Wolves, making it even harder to get a gem come through. A good example is Harvey Elliot who Liverpool got for an undisclosed fee which will be a fraction of what Fulham would have got if he’d stayed there for a couple more years. That must influence the business model for clubs like us whilst ensuring the academies at the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and City work with the cream and benefit accordingly.

Quick mid-week update:

Jimmy Storer recorded back-to-back clean sheets in a 1-0 win for Chester at home to Spennymoor which puts them joint top of the National League North.

On as sub: Bueno came on for the last 10 minutes of Feyenoord's 3-0 win over 10-man Bayern Munich.

Good luck to Roberts. Likes the other mentions above he was always one of the ones I felt had a decent amount of promise if I ever watched any of the stuff they would put up or the live games. Still young by pro terms so if he has a solid couple of years could make it to L1/L2 and make a decent career hopefully.

Fabio Silva played the full game last night in a 1-1 draw at home to Osasuna. Las Palmas got out of jail with a Neves-vs-Villa-style deflected free-kick in the 98th minute from Adnan Januzaj.

On as sub: Hoever came on after 69 minutes in a 1-1 draw vs Saint Etienne.

From the weekend:

Chem Campbell - Reading, League One
Played 57 minutes of a 2-0 defeat at Leyton Orient.

Marvin Kaleta - Motherwell, SPL
Played 78 minutes of a 2-1 defeat at St. Johnstone switched over to the left wing. Was all going fine when he was subbed off at 1-0 up, but then they conceded two goals in the last 10 minutes.

Fletcher Holman - Solihull Moors, National League
Holman - and Solihull's - barren run continued with a 2-0 defeat at home to Halifax. He played an hour and could had a couple of chances but blazed them both over.

Jimmy Storer - Chester City, National League North
Played in a 4-2 win at Scarborough. Got down well to make one very good save first half. Not much he could have done about either goal. Chester a point clear at the top.

Stan Amos and Hayden Carson - Darlaston Town
Both played the full game in a goalless draw at home to Shepshed Dynamo.

On as sub: Joe Hodge played the last 20 minutes in a 1-0 defeat at home to Bolton.
Unused sub: Chiquinho
Not in squad: Lonwijk (injured)
No game: Bueno

Joe Stodge came on for Huddersfield with 30 minutes to go, probably about his level, just.

How does a loan like this work for a team that aren't full time? I presume he is going to spilt between there training and games and still time with Wolves?
Most non league clubs at that level training Tuesday/Thursday (and mostly during season just Thursday as so many mid week games).

So he’ll be with them those evenings and make sure he gets what he needs from a physical point of view with Wolves the rest of the week leading to the weekend.

I don't want to be overly harsh here, but... does our Academy kind of suck?
Seems to have had a bit of a slow couple of years but then again we’ve had

Leo Shahar
Alvin Ayman
Brayden Clarke

All leave before 18 recently. We seem to rate Okoduwa highly too.

Important to remember we’ve produced a recent England international who we sold for 25m+ and sold Giles for 5m. Cundle will have a decent championship level career for himself too.

Where I think we struggle at the moment seems to be the 18-21 bit. It’s not an issue unique to Wolves though. Matt Jackson seemed good as effectively loans manager but since him we’ve not been so strong in that department either.

Morgan Gibbs-White

Not a bad team you can put together there from the last 25 years

Depends on how you measure it really.

Are they competive in the league, with under age-group players starring? No.

Are they producing first team squad players? Also no.

I'm not even sure it even breaks even on the young British lads really, if you take MGW out of the equation.

*Maybe* it's a level of football that helps young signings settle for half a season while they assimilate.

But yeah I suspect it does tbh. How many times do we see a player's first loan end up being his highest career level? I wouldn't be against fucking it off and doing a Brentford. Have we got any academy graduates getting regular prem minutes barring MGW?

Yeah, the kids who have been bought I didn't consider.

Suppose it probably speaks more to the quality of your average PL footballer (that is to say, fucking absurd). I just wish someone would fill the Danny Batth role again. Feels like we really need something on the pitch for folks to really connect to.

But yeah, Del has hit on something; Morgan is the only top flight player we've produced in... well at least since I've been following. I almost said Kortney Hause, kinda, but we got him from Wycombe, didn't we?

Our fans hated Batth though, inexplicably. And Naylor for that matter.

Bit of a double edged sword here. Catchment area is big in terms of population but we have to share it with Villa, Albion and Blues (forget Walsall). Not like say, Southampton who have a massive area all to themselves being as Portsmouth and Bournemouth have appalling set ups once you go past the first team.

25 years is a very long time now though isn't it.

For context Dan, 25 years before you were born was 1956 :)
