Good people of Britain...........PANIC

A Sudden Stratospheric Warming event is in progress according to the Met Office. A similar event in 2018 led to the beast from the east arriving however it doesn't always mean that we are set for a cold snap.

It really isn’t a certainty at all. Other factors need to fall into place too.

Been another strange winter. Two very very cold spells (up there with as cold as I remember it in the last 20 years or so) but generally not much by way of precipitation (autumn was very wet) and it's been 15 degrees today, in the middle of February.

Yep warm and windy today, got my lawn cut.

Definitely looking like a dry early spring. No good. Rivers going to be low for those of us who like fishing (well, for everyone obviously, but suspect I’ll notice it more than others).

Interesting. Got asked about drought planning today - that might be why.

What fishing do you do mate?

I read about that last week. It alters the shape of the jet stream, and will probably mainly affect the Atlantic and North America. It could get colder here as a result though. Depends on the extent of exactly how much it shifts the shape of the jet stream.

[Senses eye-rolling from forum regulars and admins who have managed to avoid a fishing thread so far] Fly-fishing: occasional salmon and sea trout, plenty of trout on rivers and Rutland Water. Would do more sea fishing if I lived near the sea.

Fished a lot from a kid till my early 20s (coarse), intended getting back into it when I retired but struggling to find the time, fancy a go at fly fishing, not sure if it's more active side of it or cos I love Trout!

When I do get chance (work permitting) I fly and coarse fish the Wye & Usk from Hereford down

My only real fishing experience has been deep sea off the coast of Queensland at Noosa. I loved that. Micro is a keen angler here. One day when he comes out to visit I certainly intend to take him out for going for the big stuff. Never caught a shark or a big tuna or marlin but would love to try the fight.

Sounds great. Enjoyed watching Paul and Bob when they’ve been on the Wye, especially the barbel episode.

Anyone got any pictures they can share?

Just stuck my head out the back door and it’s a beautifully clear evening.

Apart from the moon and the BA flight from Athens to Heathrow landing in about 10 minutes nothing to see unfortunately.

I think the trouble is the majority of people think you’re going to see what is shown in photos. But in reality it’s less impressive with your own eyes.

There’s a red alert currently so if you do have clear and dark skys it may be worth a look to the North. Even better if you can take a long exposure shot with your phone or camera.
