Giro d'Italia / Tour de France

....Having watched the loop footage that's around on twitter I think Sagan is still at fault but maybe not as harsh as I first thought.

The time penalty, demotion to last and -80 points would probably have been fair.
....

That's pretty much where I am. To lose two big riders in one incident is shit for the Tour as a whole. This being only my first real year of watching pro cycling (aside from the Olympics events!) I was really looking forward to seeing what Sagan was all about as I'd heard so much about him.

Sagan has left the tour. No appeal allowed.

I think the DQ is harsh, and also that the GIF above doesn't prove or disprove anything: you could say that Cav's slight lean left is to let Sagan know he's there and to allow room; Sagan then continues to move right and flicks the elbow which appears to be when (as) Cavendish loses control. I do believe there were accusations that Sagan caused an accident (Thomas's?) with 1.5k to go, and also barged Griepel but at least part of that was rescinded.

I did see some initial reactions and there are a lot of Cav haters out there; blaming him for the accident yet at the same time contradicting themselves about what it is like to be involved in a sprint. Sad times.

Just realised I was at the end point for today's stage at a training course last year - really, really would not like to cycle up there, the car only just about made it.

seemed odd tactics from bmc today, though I guess made the stage a bit more interesting with quite a few teams down in numbers at the death as a result.

I've read some of the comments below the article and they make the E&S bellends look reasonable. Having watched the loop footage that's around on twitter I think Sagan is still at fault but maybe not as harsh as I first thought.

I can't see how Sagan is cycling's biggest star though. I just don't understand how sprinters could ever be the biggest stars of the teams they're in as by definition they can really only do one thing.

Sagan isn't a sprinter though. Essentially he's a one day rider (and along with Van Avermaet) is the best one day rider in the world. He happens to be so strong in so many situations that he's able to sprint at a very high level but he's far more adaptable than this. The thing with Sagan though is it's the way he rides, he ignites every race he's in and unlike 99% of the peloton he'll risk losing to win. I've been watching cycling for 20 years and he's easily the most talented rider I've seen, he's a phenomenon.

If I had my old bike I would be having to change its name!

British former Tour de France cyclist Robert Millar has completed a transition to become a woman.

The 58-year-old has decided to go public with the gender change because she says there is "a much better acceptance and understanding".

Millar was best known for winning the King of the Mountains prize in the Tour de France in 1984.

Philippa York, who becomes the first high-profile cyclist to go public, made the statement on cyclingnews.com.

Is that true or not? Only when I read his biography it said that there were scurrilous rumours to the same effect.

Can Calmejane hang on to win his first stage in the TdF? 5.8 Km left and 1.24 ahead of SKY. Oh no, he has got cramp with 4.6km left.

Aru and Contador will definitely be out to play, even if Quintana looks weakened by the sad loss of Valverde. It is going to be epic.

Valverde posted a tweet to say he's had his knee reconstructed and he's back home. Ouch.

Well this stage is already living up to expectations. Grand Colombier will start soon and I am really enjoying it so far. Hope the rain fucks off before the descent of the Chat because that could be lethal in damp conditions.
