Coronavirus

Yeah, I'd equate it a bit to xG. In itself and in isolation it means nothing, it's just a useful tool to be used.

Yep, I had a high BMI and bought a scale which also told me my bones were not dense - I just had rather a lot of fat, both visceral and subcontaneous,

Should have been saying dense boned. Makes sense on a lot of levels ;)

My Mum has now received her letter to get her vaccination and my younger sister was somewhat surprised this morning to be told by her Dr's she is now classed as in the vunerable group and has her vaccination next week.

There's an outside chance that I might get mine early, anyone who has ever been admitted to hospital with asthma is supposed to get bumped up the list.

Now I have, an absolute ton of times, but the last occasion was in about 1993.

Late 90's the last time I had to waste peoples time with an Asthma attack

The only issue my Sister has is using Anti-D's. Everything else is fine and dandy, so could be they are bumping up people with known mental health issues

Er, yeah, I think I'm covered there :D

Obviously I'm not really at risk, I'm far more of a danger to myself than anything Covid could do.

It's not used as a precise tool, it's used as a very quick way of determining if someone is in a risk category or not related to their weight. For that it is a perfectly reasonable tool.

As I said, context is everything and it isn't a one stop shop diagnostic tool. Just because BMI won't tell you if you're at risk from having a fatty liver, high blood pressure or anything else doesn't make it useless.
It pretty much does make it useless.

It either works as a diagnostic tool for all or it's a waste of time. Of course there is no diagnostic tool for all which is the reason we have specialists so they can diagnose things.

Experts eh, who needs 'em.

No it doesn't mean it's a waste of time. If we statistically know that people who have a BMI of 35+ are more likely to suffer from complications related to obeisty, we now have a really easy way of identifying them based upon a very quick calculation.

We know that people over 40 BMI die more frequently from covid than people under 40 BMI. That is useful to know.

To your point around experts, surely it makes sense to get them looking to the people most likely to need attention. BMI does that as people with higher BMI tend to suffer from complications more than those with a lower BMI. Obviously other things need to be taken into account (are they the Rock for instance).

Janine had her jab on Monday. ICU with asthma back in the day but no problems for well over a decade.

I watched Contagion yesterday for the first time. Its like a really made corporate training video for Covid!

The ZOE app which is generally ahead of the curve on numbers has seen a slight increase in having symptoms. 3 days in a row now which should be worrying but they think this is now down to people who have been vaccinated and reporting side effects to them rather than catching the virus.

You never get linear progress, there'll always be a bit of bobbling. It's spikes you want to worry about. Downward for no reason and you've done something wrong somewhere, upwards for no reason and we have a problem.

It was quite amusing to see some journalists quoting the ZOE data after weeks of ignoring the drop but straight on it thanks to the small increase.

Some of the media throughout this pandemic have been appalling. At times it's like they are trying to push people towards breakdowns and suicide

I have tried to stay away from the news for this reason - they're particularly obsessed with reporting on new variants which is fine if there is something exceptional or worrying about a variant but most of them aren't and don't actually change anything but the click-baity headlines make them sound worse. Even the BBC fall into this trap.

The MiL is one of those that watches the news at lunch and tea time and the amount of times we have had to calm her down is just stupid now. Wont listen to us saying just stop watching it though.

I get my info from following various folk on Twitter now. So much more explained and detailed doing it that way.
