I work for a charity, providing transport for the community,at the moment I take SEN kids to school,I've asked if the schools are off,do we stop at home? Been told by manager we'll find work for you,but it'll be elderly daycare centres and the like,I've raised the question of will that be safe? Only to be told we think so.
I've then asked if I refuse, due to possibly being contagious, will there be disciplinary action taken? To which the answer was yes, you're refusing to work, mind you, this is the same manager that bullied a coworker into quitting when she told him to man up and get a grip over his depression when he came back to work

Is there a HR department where you work?

I'm also thinking they can't sack you for following govt. guidelines around self isolation especially when you'll be interacting with vulnerable people

Agree with Andy I really don't think you could be fired for being sensible. Sounds like your boss is a bit of an asshole to be honest.

My partner works at the local Costco: she's just messaged me saying that they had a wagon load of bog roll delivered this morning and it's gone already! People are such fucking morons...

Popped to out to get bacon butty from the van on our local Tesco today (he makes a mean sandwich and I was banned from cooking as we have people due to view our house today). I presume Tesco had put a limit of 2 packs per customer as everyone walking out at 8am had 2 packs.

They can sack them, whether it is subsequently determined to be a fair dismissal is another matter and only if they have 2 years service could they go to a Tribunal. The government has done nothing to extend employment rights as a result of Coronavirus beyond some change to SSP.

Tesco’s packed with silver surfers panic buying all sorts of shit and clearing the shelves. No eggs loo rolls amongst others. I couldn’t get through to the alcohol isle which was all I wanted to stock up on . I found a short burst of coughing cleared them nicely

10 more people died in the last 24 hours.

It's unfair dismissal if he's sacked for taking appropriate steps to ensure the health and safety of the people in his workplace, you know, as per government guidelines. There's no qualifying period then.

I'd be tempted to go over her head on this, the danger is though the higher bosses know exactly what she's like

There is a Hr dept at head office in Halifax,
I've worked here less than a year,
I'm fairly certain HR know what the boss is like due to,2 people resigning recently citing her as the reason,1 was the colleague with the depression, another put a complaint in due to not getting another job within the company after an interview, person who got the job, didn't have an interview, but is the bosses boyfriend! But like most people like this in workplaces everywhere she's appears to be Teflon coated and getting away with it.
I'll see how it pans out,and review whether I stand my ground if the situation comes to that

Good point about the automatic unfair dismissal on the grounds that they were taking action not to put other employees at risk. Still been sacked though.

If you can I'd email them and ask what the policies are around coronavirus and self-isolation. At least you have it in writing then.

No way she sacks you if it's in direct contradiction of policy and if she tries to you can go straight over her head.

If possible get her to email you her stance about self isolation too or email her for confirmation you've understood it correctly.

It's a ballache but documentation is key in these kinds of situations

One confirmed case in SA and suddenly it's panic time. Supermarket shelves empty, all schools closed next week. Wanted to go to Sams Club this morning, but around a hundred people in line to get in and I didn't have that much time. Yesterday was the busiest day of the year so far for my liquor store. Not Xmas/New Year levels but 25% above expected sales. Today will probably be busier.

Customers mostly worried about looking after kids while schools closed. Residents of old folks home nearby are upset about quarantine attempts more than actually being infected. For me realistically there are no reasons to worry unless I/my wife are infected, or supplier distribution centres have to close.

But people panic buy anyway.

Fucking hell:
Northern Ireland schools will be closed for “at least 16 weeks” but they will they will not be shutting immediately, the region’s first minister, Arlene Foster, has said after a summit with the Ireland’s taoiseach, Leo Varadkar.
If the plan is to close schools across the whole of the UK for 16 weeks that’s pretty shocking.

If that happens I can kiss my house, my car, everything I own pretty much, goodbye, I'd be completely ruined. Dark times ahead for me and my family I think...

I can only think 9 weeks of that are the already scheduled Easter, half term and summer holiday. But not good at all.
