Coronavirus

I work for a recruitment agency and my biggest client is the largest hospital in Oxford. I recruit domestic staff, porters, ward hosts, admin & catering staff for the hospital - and they are absolutely ran off their feet and desperate for new starters ASAP. However, by the guidance/bullet points released from the government, our agency is not a “key business”. So I’m not sure whether I’m allowed to go to work or not. Guess it will be up to my boss.

However, I can’t recruit or interview staff from my living room.

Just had a staff e-mail to sat that Sports Direct/Evans Cycles are staying open in order to be able to supply fitness equipment those who want it and want to exercise from home.

Makes sense I guess.

Also on this, how far down the supply chain do you go.

Royal Mail are being classed as essential by the Government
My wife works for the company that makes everything for Royal Mail, so staying open....but if the paper mills they have to use close, then the items can't be made and RM are fucked. Same then goes for the paper mills suppliers.

RM are currently in full panic mode and ordering like crazy

My wife works for royal mail, they are really trying to do the best they can - but the government (rightly?) says they have to continue. They have just announced no sharing of vans (which is the normal way of working), so they are having to hire extra vans and provide double the normal amount of equipment etc. Probably explains why your wife's company has such big orders.

Personally I would rather they just stopped it all, but I guess that is not possible.

You are linked to the NHS so you will be essential IMO.

He should have said "unless you are a key worker on the list from the shutting the schools announcement, your journey to work is not absolutely necessary and you shouldn't make it".

He's left a bloody grey area.

Exactly...wayyyy too fucking wishy washy for me...needed to be more precise.

Non essential will need to be going in tomorrow just to get shit done and start the lockdown from Weds.

She works for the firm that prints the stamps/horizon labels etc rather than equipment. She is in charge of purchasing (amongst a load of other things) and is currently in melt down as she has to keep the paper coming in or else the presses stop. It seems the demand for stamps has risen over the last 4 weeks and RM are now ordering more in than they do for the Christmas period

Course you can. Our place is doing it for staff coming from all over Europe who start at the end of April.

2 rounds of interview over video call.

Why couldn't you do that?

makes no sense...run on the spot of do some pushups/situps/ use a chair to exercise..not hard at all.
A non essential that means more drivers/warehouse folks etc will all be travelling around.

If you have a job and work to go to then it is business as normal for now. I'm expecting orders at my place to dry up in the next couple of weeks but for now we will continue. Most of what we do wouldn't be classed as essential but we do deliver parts for food delivery trucks.

I think that's probably ok, those are circles of people you see regularly and there is a point to the business

Shops or places where you have lots of different members of Joe public is what's causing the problem.

Well we supply paper to hospitals (and schools previously) and also take in paper direct from the mills. So are we essential down the supply line?

I agree he's been too vague and just left it up to business bosses to decide. Probably because the government would have to fork out 80% of wages if they told everyone to shut.

Bar the fact that I give a lift to two other people to work so in theory that is a more than two people public gathering in my car that has been specifically banned.

Be fucking precise you idiot.

To be fair he's not going to give a list of businesses that can stay open and businesses that can't

If you're in a business that has key services or integrates in such a way that without your businesses' services the key services can't function and you can't work from home then you can go to work

Everyone else work from home or don't go in

The Guardians take on what the new measure are.

What do the new restrictions involve?
In brief: an Italian-style lockdown to force people to stay at home beyond a small range of very limited circumstances. Under the terms explained by Boris Johnson in his TV address, people will only be allowed to leave home for the following reasons:

• Shopping for necessities, as infrequently as possible.

• One form of exercise a day, such as running or cycling, alone or with household members.

• For medical or care needs, for example to help a vulnerable person.

• Travelling to and from work, but only if you cannot work from home.

It will be banned to meet friends, or to shop for anything beyond essentials, or to gathering in crowds.

It doesn't need to be a business that has key services. He's stopping people from congregating in town centres for shopping, retail parks for non food shopping, DIY centres etc etc.

Not quite sure what you need?

Paddingtonwolf is not allowed to travel. Premier quality however is. Now let me list the rest of the population of the United Kingdom....

It's pretty clear tbh. Unless they live with you, dont give them a lift

Ambiguous one that.

Looks like tomorrow morning will be a quick trip to the office for me to grab my monitor and few other bits so I can set up a proper office at home for a few weeks. Annoying they couldn't have stuck to the normal time slot for this announcement so I could've packed it all up and bought it with me this evening.

Not sure where it leaves our sites though, it's necessary for them to travel to carry out their job but is their job necessary? Only seen a written summary of the statement so not sure which way to take it, open to interpretation! Perhaps they've done it that way intentionally to provide a bit of wiggle room and try to keep more businesses trading where they can.

They should have locked down London early last week. Ridiculous scenes on the tube earlier, it’s a massive virus hotpot. Let’s hope they stop all trains outwards.
