Wolves 2-2 Spurs: EFL Cup 3rd Rd - Bah Lost on Penalties Verdict Thread

Don't know where we go with Silva tbh, I've spent the last 12 months trying to be positive as much as possible, been desperate for him to come good. But I'm seeing no improvement, in fact I just don't see any redeeming features in his game. Maybe he will come good in 3 or 4 years but we don't have that time.
We could send him out on loan but who would have him? Personally I don't think he'd get much game time in the Championship.....maybe not even in the 1st division.
I really, really hope he makes me eat my words

Dogshit at 2-0 down but talk about a goal changing a game, Donk's lovely header brought confidence back to the side - also, see what can happen when a player whips a corner into the danger area? We were much better from then on and the build up and finish for the equaliser was a joy to behold. Ruddy followed up his almost calamitous spill with a couple of worldies, he also seemed keener on wellying the ball forward with a goal kick than playing around at the back but he is old school.

Real shame for Yerson to only last about 6 minutes of his comeback, didn't look too clever at all, hope its not as bad as it seems and from a selfish/Wolves POV, hope we haven't signed another sicknote player.

Felt great to celebrate a goal at last and in the second half we looked the far likelier winners but then we had the lottery of penalties in which we were the masters of our own downfall.

RAN, Boly, Donk and Hwang should be knocking on the door for Sunday and Traore dispplayed yet again that for as frustrating as he can be, he is key to us as an attacking unit.

Just hope we go and build on this now and get our season going.

The Fabio truthers will be along soon to explain you don't understand his movement properly or appreciate the space he creates for himself and others.

Tbf I've seen all that myself and commented on it at times but feel we should be seeing more by now....I hate writing young players off but tbh he really doesn't deserve his place on the bench.

As one of the Fabio ‘truthers’ I’m struggling tonight

Ait-Nouri, Boly and Donk the real positives tonight along with the fact that Podence showed he can finish. Yes we showed fight to comeback but it was awful from the time Coady stepped on the pitch but improved when we scored as it we stepped the tempo up a bit.

Thought Hwang, Podence, Neves and Hoever were very sloppy with the ball but the first 3 named did improve and looked our biggest threats. Felt sorry for Fabio as he tried and looked ok in the first 5 minutes when he ran with Sanchez down the right, that was the best of it though as he made some strange runs and either the balls in to him were awful or his touch was like a rebound box, i suppose he pressed well late in the first half.

Traore caused problems because he occupies players but was generally pretty poor but could have been put through by Moutinho had the ball been better.

Got to be honest despite the comeback i hated the game as i thought overall we were pretty poor and on another day concede 4 or 5 and that's as someone who has been pretty positive about how we've played so far this season.

Six of the last 10 penalties in shootouts missed in front of The Northbank. Win the fucking toss Coady and send them down The Southbank.

Don't think anyone could come and say anything tonight. We all know we overpaid but I still think he's better than we're seeing but understand why people don't see that. Never going to see the best of him asking him to constantly come and hold the ball up with no support centrally but there were some weird runs tonight that looked like a kid lacking in confidence and trying too hard. He did press pretty well though so there was a positive.

Well, I went from sitting there for 30 minutes with more than a whiff of relegation emanating from the team to watching an enjoyable game for the most part

As others have commented Silva looks lost, there's no defending that transfer now, it stinks.

Nice lad and all and wish him well but a generational talent at being average at everything is not going to win us many games.

RAN looked good, Neves was hit and miss, not sure if he's struggling with covering more ground some of those passes looked tired, Boly was nice to have back in the team apart from their first he looked pretty solid. I get the feeling Kilman was more than proving a point to Nuno who pretty much put him up for sale, he played really well

Traore, always the enigma flashes of brilliance but ultimately frustrating, if him and Hwang could click (like they nearly did) they'd be very entertaining.

I won't even bother commenting on the penalties, just shite

Ultimately its another loss, not sure if the second half was a quick spray of Lynx Africa to mask the smell of half an hour of relegation or a truer reflection that we should be OK.

We seem to be morphing very quickly into a poor side. Lost on penalties which is a lottery but again we’re finding different ways of coming second in a 2 horse race.
The squad is entrenched in defeat currently.
Before Dendoncker header things were pretty grim. Could easily have been buried by then.
That gave us the lift and we grew into it and got level having said Ruddy makes some good saves afterwards to stop us falling behind again.
Decent character to fight back but I think that’s papering over some huge crevices.
Spurs are bang average and will get nowhere near CL this season.
I think Fosun will have decision to make this time next month, stick and hope it comes good or make a change to preserve status.

Appalling until we scored, absolute garbage. Not a bad second half but we can't have spells like that, it'll wreck us.

Devastated for Mosquera. Hwang looks a good player, the wingbacks were decent (well, until Tanganga assaulted RAN - thanks again Bankes for doing fuck all).

It'll be a tough winter.

Play Fabio Silva in a two to cover for all his deficiencies but hope he poaches a few. Fuck me.

In which case may as well have signed, Billy Sharp, Dwight Gayle, Matej Vydra, Bobby Reid or get Kris Boyd out of retirement.

I don't want to go in to the Fabio debate again so i'll start a new one, where does everyone think Coady was off to for their second goal? Left a gaping hole for Kane to saunter through for a 1 on 1. We have to move on from him very quickly imo.

Shocking defending all round that. You could drive a bus through our defence there.

This is a huge issue. I have zero faith in us ever keeping a clean sheet at the moment. Every attack looks like a goal.

Just got back, haven't read any other views, so hopefully not going over too much ground.

Strange performance, as prior to Donk's goal we were fucking awful, looked devoid of confidence, couldn't retain the ball, lacked desire, we were just dreadful.

Then of course, we see a decent corner and what was a really good header from Donk, and all of a sudden we are on the front foot and we look good, there's fluidity, energy and some quality.

Ruddy - made 2 good saves that were more luck than judgement and one fucking howler that i can't understand firstly how he did it, and how it didn't go in. He also kicked several goal kicks straight out of play when trying to find RAN or Hoever, so a mixed bag, but i don't want to see him near the no 1 spot ever again ideally.

Hoever - Probably our only player that wasn't poor in the first half an hour, and he got better as the game went on, despite looking knackered, created a good chance for Hwang (that was a penalty surely) defended pretty well, even when Son came on, and kept the ball well, something he struggles with often. There was one wild slice out of play, but that aside i thought it was probably his most consistent performance for Wolves so far?

Mosquera - Not on long enough to judge, stretchered off so it looks bad, but i THINK he was amongst the posse on the side watching on at the end? I may be wrong, but if it was him, you'd hope his injury wasn't too bad.

Boly - Considering he'd been out a while, not too bad, not at peak Boly form, and got sold a little easily for Ndombole's first goal, but that aside i thought he played well - appeared to be wrestled to the ground on a corner in the second half, Marcel stylee??

Kilman - He was ok, some slack passing, and a couple of ok crosses, could perhaps have done more on the Kane goal if i am remembering correctly? I think he got caught square?

RAN - Dreadful first 30 mins, not helped by Ruddy and Hwang selling him short with some really bad passes, but he improved as the game went on, hope to see him start on Sunday - that is, if he is well enough! He looked like he was walking home from a really heavy night on the beers when he went off, not sure what happened to him, looked a bad challenge? No booking though..

Neves - 5 or 6 truly dreadful passes in that first half, lost possession on the goal, and really didn't look himself. His free kick was better (deflected) and he hit the bar late on (deflected). He's going for the top corner with his penalty, which comes with the risk of it going high and wide, and that's exactly what we saw. Lead to a bloke behind me in the Billy Wright (!) repeatedly calling him a useless cunt, and shouting "how can you miss a penalty?" Prick. Anyway - Neves, in summary not at his best tonight.

Donk - A goal and an assist, who would have ever predicted that. Can't really recall him doing a great deal else, but his presence in both boxes on set pieces was valuable, and his goal really was a good goal.

Podence - Our best player on the night, a constant threat, won free kicks, beat his man regularly, kept the ball well, and of course finished his goal superbly, lovely goal that. He must start next game.

Fabio - Tried hard (as ever) but nothing really came off, he needs to try and gather the ball in when it comes into feet, rather than trying to lay it off immediately, this will come with age and experience i guess, but he was way off the pace tonight, Spurs CBs had him for dinner.

Hwang - Shocking first half an hour, made bad decisions, sold RAN short two or 3 times, couldn't beat his man. Then we saw an improvement after our 1st goal, and then second half when we saw him more centrally, he was showing Fabio what he should be doing, sticking his arse into the defenders, holding the ball, winning free kicks, harrying and hassling, and we got the reward for his endeavours when he dispossessed Ndombele which ultimately lead to the 2nd goal. I thought it was a good performance when more central, but really poor for that first half.

Subs

Coady - Looked flustered initially, I couldn't understand why he came on as RCB, but after their 2nd goal he swapped with Boly, as we started to get ourselves into the game he improved, and you could see his verbal influence growing. I imagine he'll have got some criticism for their 1st goal, but i felt he was let down by the awful pass from Podence, but perhaps if he's more composed, he doesn't twat it off Ndombole.

Adama - Excellent until moved central, then a bit of a passenger, his first run creates a chance, then another where he fires it across the 6 yard box with no one around to tap it in. He does seem to work better with Hoever than Semedo, which is odd really.

Semedo - excellent! Desire to win the ball, defended well, got forward well, should have bloody shot at one opportunity though, probably lacking confidence after Watford. Oh and god knows why he didn't recognise he would need to start getting ready when RAN was down, took an age!

Moutinho - One good corner, one awful (short) corner, scored his pen, that was about it. Oh and an overhit pass to Adama that he should have done better with.

Not sure what to make of it really, i was terrified where the club was going after that first half an hour (relegation, devoid of hope, we were that bad), then we really seemed to sort ourselves out after the Donk goal, and looked threatening again. Despite the obvious ultimate loss, i hope we have got a bit of confidence from the fact we scored 2 and fought back.

* We scored in the first half!
* Other than the Asia cup, when was the last time we won a penalty shootout? Our record seems to be awful?
* Ndombele involved in all the goals at some level tonight, scored, assist, marking (!) Donk, dispossessed for the Podence goal.

We beat Swindon in 2009, think that was the last one. Neill Collins nailed one!

Adama was shite.
