Wolves 2-2 Crystal Palace: Verdict Thread

Essentially admitting the squad isn't fit for purpose isn't a great look, wonder if Hobbs and Shi will clock it

Sa, Johnstone, Semedo, Ait-Nouri, Dawson, Lemina, Doherty (sigh), Toti, they are all part of the dressing room and have played loads of PL football
Even Cunha and Gomes have been with us for over 1.5 seasons.

It's Doyles second season with us.

Santi Bueno hasn't played loads but he's hardly a kid.

So of the first team today we have JSL who hasn't played much in the PL and he's got 4 goals and an assist.

I suppose Guedes hasn't played much but that's fair enough.

Anybody who doesn't think we're in dire trouble here.

2003/04

P10 W2 D3 L5 Points 9

2011/12

P10 W2 D2 L4 Points 8

2024/25

P10 W0 D3 L7 Points 3.

Two sides who finished rock bottom of the league had triple and nearly triple the output we have so far.

We're rapidly approaching being fucked regardless of O'Neil staying or going.
Well logging in from Vanuatu I was hoping to see GON gone but no . . . the powers in charge obviously feel our current form is still OK to persist with the numbskull.

Looking at the comparison above is quite stark. Despite everything wrong with the squad in terms of imbalance etc it is far superior to what we had in 03/04 and 11/12, yet our pts output is considerably less. This is on the manager whose record is far worse than Dave Jones FFS.

Reading his post match comments I just want to 🤮. Unfortunately a few weeks ago I resigned myself that were heading for relegation but God knows what that will entail given Fosun’s idiosyncratic way of running a football club.

At least the weather is fine here 😋.

Atmosphere in the South Bank is pretty shit, apathy definitely in abundance, I was there at least the final whistle, absolutely no support for O’Neil and a few boos.
Would be gone tonight in a perfect world but it’s probably all hanging on next Saturday.

Watched bits on a stream on my phone, so won't comment too much. As JD said if Sa calls for that ball and JSL doesn't leave it, he needs to clean him out. That's what good keepers do.

We're going down for a number of reasons, but the largest is the failure to keep a clean sheet irrespective of the opposition. Palace stopped themselves from scoring at times and when they did we gave it to them. Absolutely anybody can and will score against us. We've gone from conceding 25% more than anybody else to 29%. Hobbs isn't stupid, he'll know that, so keeping GON is now just ego. I do think he'll be gone next week as I can't see us beating anyone.

This just isnt true is it.
I think that has been taken out of context tbh. Certainly on Sky he said that the signings made in the summer didn't have dozens of Premier League games or experience. That they were mostly younger players from different leagues, and they are basically trying to help them learn to be able to play in the Premier League.

It was a veiled dig at Shi and Hobbs IMO and it wouldn't surprise me if that's the point he was trying to make when talking about the dressing room to the BBC. I'd have to hear the interview to be sure, if anyone has it? I'll check the website to see what his quotes are.

I mean whatever the decision Hobbs and Shi make now they’ll look stupid. Sack him months into a 4 year contract, firstly why give him it? Clearly had a terrible end to last season and his real test was being able to recover then replicate his good stuff from last season. How about discussing it in January if it’s going well or pulling the plug 4 weeks ago when it was clear it’s not working.
Conversely they stick with him to long as they believe in the process then end sacking him January when it’s far to late.

Still no GON interview on Wolves website or BBC, other than one or two choice quotes about staying up.

Weird how it always takes so long for us to put out manager interviews or speak to the media away from the TV games.

Certainly looks like Bournemouth knew what they were doing.

That was disheartening.

Maybe it was the drink, but felt a bit of excitement and edge going into the game - and then we play like that. Gave the fans nothing to go on.

Don't really get the Sa criticism (on the basis he did call for it). If he did, then JSL has to leave it, pretty basic. I also thought he was fouled by Munoz, and that it was pretty clear-cut.

But what a chaotic performance overall.

The biggest concern is that I actually think the players are trying. Yet, we conceded two and it could've easily been four or five.

That sums it up, it's all on the manager. At this level, every side has good players, so it's the margins that make all the difference. We're at a disadvantage straight away because of the manager.

His next job will be mid-table Championship - and he will need to prove himself at that level.

Just please sack him. We're obviously in deep shit regardless, but the season can be salvaged with a sacking and a new manager in.

Will add, think the narrative that we were booing the Doyle sub is a bit misleading. He wasn't great, it was no loss that he went off. In fact, Lemina was an improvement. But, that was the easy way for the fans to show O'Neil that he is useless. I noticed Keen has deleted is tweet claiming the players were clapped off.

I read it also as a reaction to the introduction of Bellegarde and Guedes (who've hardly pulled up trees) and the reactive nature of his subs generally

Guedes was already waiting to come on, but amidst the wreckage of all the other poor decisions I’d almost forgotten that Bellegarde was the reaction sub. It’s perplexing what he sees in him. It’s one area where he has other options. Not turning to one of them was likely a boo prompter.

IMV he had Bellegarde behind RAN which was… a choice.

We've scored the same amount of goals as Forest in 3rd, and more than 10 teams.

Our defence though....😭

Just watching back the disallowed goal, trust me if it’s the other way around we start to get all the tin hat stuff from our fan base.
It’s absolutely not being overturned if it’s given onfield.
Sa goes to dive on the ball doesn’t have it under control and the contact doesn’t impede him very fortunate.
