It's the sunk cost fallacy which is just bizarre in football.I'm not convinced it protects our financial interests though - if he's not worth £30m now, then paying him £5m per year, to be a fringe player with little end product isn't going to add much value. And the older he gets, the more likely it is that people realise that his "potential" is perpetual, and never going to be realised
We lose nothing if he walks for free as his transfer fee has already been spent. If we pay him £5m per year for 3 years that's a huge liability round our necks for a bit part player.
